BMW And Redwood Materials Collaborate On Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling For Electric Vehicles
BMW of North America and Redwood Materials have announced a collaboration to recycle lithium-ion batteries from BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad vehicles in the U.S. This partnership aims to establish a closed-loop circular value chain for these batteries, highlighting both companies' dedication to sustainability.
Redwood Materials will collaborate with BMW Group's extensive network of nearly 700 locations across the U.S. These include dealerships and distribution centers, where they will recover end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to recycle and refine essential minerals like nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper. An impressive 95% to 98% of these minerals will be reintegrated into the battery supply chain for more sustainable electric vehicles.

The materials within a battery can be recycled almost indefinitely without being consumed or lost during their use in vehicles. Redwood’s recycling processes significantly reduce environmental impact compared to traditional mining or other recycling methods. They cut energy usage by 80%, CO2 emissions by 70%, and water consumption by 80%.
Denise Melville, Head of Sustainability at BMW of North America, stated: "Together with Redwood Materials, BMW is laying the groundwork for the creation of a fully circular battery supply chain in the U.S." She added that this agreement aligns with BMW's vision of an electric, digital, and circular future.
Redwood Materials operates a facility in Reno, Nevada where battery components are recycled and refined. A second campus is under construction in Charleston, South Carolina. This location is close to BMW Group Plant Spartanburg and Plant Woodruff. By the end of the decade, these plants will assemble at least six fully electric models along with their high-voltage battery packs.
BWM Group was one of the first automakers to set up operations in South Carolina when it started building in Spartanburg in 1992. Over three decades, this plant has grown to cover 8 million square feet. With an annual capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles, it is now the largest single BMW plant globally.
Commitment to Electric Mobility
Cal Lankton, Chief Commercial Officer at Redwood Materials commented: "The transition to electric mobility presents a tremendous opportunity to rethink how we manage the batteries that power our clean energy future." He emphasized that their partnership with BMW ensures responsible battery management which will enhance the environmental footprint of lithium-ion batteries while reducing costs.
BWM Group has been present in America since 1975 through its subsidiary BMW of North America LLC. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars NA LLC began distributing vehicles in 2003. The group includes marketing, sales, and financial services for various brands including motorcycles under MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
BMW's Presence in America
The company also operates Designworks—a strategic design consultancy based in California—and maintains a technology office in Silicon Valley among other operations across the country. In South Carolina specifically lies BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC which serves as a global center for competence on X models assembling several Sports Activity Vehicles like X3 through X7 along with XM models.
The sales organization represents itself via networks comprising 350 passenger car centers alongside sports activity vehicle centers; there are also motorcycle retailers numbering around144 plus104 MINI dealers alongside38 Rolls-Royce car dealers nationwide too! Their headquarters lie at Woodcliff Lake New Jersey under nameplate US Holding Corp serving North American markets primarily though!
