BMW Motorrad Faces Tough Conditions At MotoAmerica Superbikes Road America
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 3, 2024… Round 3 of the 2024 MotoAmerica Superbike series presented significant challenges for competitors, with rain causing disruptions during Saturday’s Race 1 at Road America circuit in Wisconsin. Stock 1000 riders did not participate in this race weekend.
During Qualifying, Cameron Beaubier and his No. 6 Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW M 1000 RR set a fast pace with a 2:09.764 lap, 1.2 seconds ahead of P2. Rising star Sean Dylan Kelly posted the 5th fastest qualifying time on his No. 40 TopPro Race Team BMW, while Beaubier’s teammate, JD Beach, would start the 10-lap Race 1 from 7th on his No. 95 machine.
Sean Dylan Kelly pushed hard from the start and was in P2 coming around turn one. Kelly soon took the lead but ran wide due to the wet conditions and reentered mid-field. Beaubier, initially in 3rd position, moved to the front by lap 3, with Kelly close behind after working through the field.
Beaubier’s pace forced him to run wide in the same corner as Kelly did on the first lap, pushing him back to 7th place. Treacherous conditions with standing water caused riders to lose traction and hydroplane. Kelly’s race ended on lap 3 while leading as he lost front traction and slid off into the gravel.
Beaubier’s race concluded on Turn 1 of Lap 7 when he slid off into the gravel and required assistance to leave the track. His return for Race 2 was uncertain. JD Beach finished in 4th position while Danilo Lewis and his No. 94 Team Brazil BMW finished in 6th.
Steel Commander Superbikes Race 2
Sean Dylan Kelly and JD Beach started their BMWs from 3rd and 4th positions respectively, while Cameron Beaubier sat out due to injuries from Race 1. Kelly pushed hard to make up for his DNF from Race 1 and traded positions with his closest competitor until the last lap.
Kelly was running in 2nd when a shift issue forced him back into 6th place, elevating JD Beach into the 3rd position for a well-deserved podium spot after an excellent race.
2024 Championship Standings
Cameron Beaubier moved into 2nd place overall after a tough weekend. Sean Dylan Kelly left Road America in 5th place and JD Beach in 8th. Danilo Lewis and Team Brazil lead the Superbike Cup Championship with fellow BMW rider Nolan Lamkin and Visit Indiana/Tom Wood Powersports in 2nd.
The next event for BMW Motorrad Motorsport Customer Race teams will be at MotoAmerica Superbikes at Brainerd, MN, from June 14-16.
