BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2024: Team Germany Triumphs In Namibia's Rugged Terrain
The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2024 returned to Africa, with Namibia as its stunning setting. Over six days, 22 teams from around the globe, including 16 men's and 6 women's teams, covered a challenging 1,350-kilometer route. This event was more than a competition; it tested skill, endurance, and camaraderie, embodying the GS spirit.
Participants navigated diverse terrains like dry savannas and rocky trails. Each day brought unique challenges to test riders' off-road skills, mechanical knowledge, navigation abilities, intelligence, and teamwork. The event showcased the rugged versatility of the BMW R 1300 GS Trophy Competition Bike.
Team Germany achieved an extraordinary victory in the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2024. After South Africa's dominance in previous editions since 2016, Germany reclaimed the title they last won in 2012. Their consistent performance across Namibia's demanding terrain was key to their success.
Christopher Michi expressed disbelief and joy at their win: "It’s an indescribable feeling. We came here to give our best, but actually to stand here as winners, it’s surreal." Niko Wecker added that their strategic approach and focus allowed them to gain points steadily.
The Female International Team emerged victorious after six days of intense competition through Namibia's tough landscapes. Their journey was marked by skill, teamwork, and determination as they tackled dunes and rocky passes with enthusiasm and grit.
Małgorzata Jakubiak shared her excitement: "I am beyond thrilled! This feels like a dream come true." Anna Cárdova echoed this sentiment: "I am over the moon! I never imagined we would come this far." Their victory highlighted the growing impact of female riders in adventure motorcycling.
A Day-by-Day Adventure: Challenges Faced
The event began with a ride from Midgard to Ai Aiba on Day 1. Riders faced challenges like the Namibia Welcome Trial and AKRAPOVIČ Enduro Challenge. Day 2 took them from Ai Aiba to Spitzkoppe with tasks such as the Flying Boxer Challenge.
On Day 3, participants navigated around Spitzkoppe facing challenges like the Camel Thorn Tree Challenge. Day 4 saw a transition from desert dunes to Swakopmund's coast with trials like Rooi Tafel Trial. The longest day was Day 5 with over 400 km covered back to Midgard.
The Final Stretch: Concluding Days
The final day featured a technical loop around Midgard estate with a special challenge called the Final Course. Riders had to navigate complex turns and slalom sections testing their technical abilities one last time before concluding under Namibian skies.
The closing ceremony celebrated achievements with music from local DJ and band "Blikweg." Participants shared stories reflecting on friendships forged during this unforgettable journey filled with laughter and camaraderie.
Safety First: Medical Support at GS Trophy
David Rubel emphasized safety at GS Trophy by ensuring quick response times comparable to European or U.S standards within 15-16 minutes for accidents. The team included four medical cars equipped with doctors and paramedics alongside helicopter support for emergencies.
Rubel noted Namibia's unforgiving landscape posed challenges like dehydration or injuries from falls requiring preparedness through satellite communication resources ensuring participant safety without compromising adventure spirit.

The BMW R 1300 GS was engineered specifically for GS Trophy rigors featuring a new air/liquid-cooled boxer engine delivering robust power while maintaining agility through weight reductions enhanced handling capabilities making it ideal for navigating Namibia’s landscapes.
