Setbacks And Strategy Fall Short For BMW M Team RLL At Detroit IMSA Race

The fifth race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season proved challenging for BMW M Team RLL. Held on the tight streets of Detroit, the event saw Philipp Eng and Jesse Krohn finish in seventh place with their BMW M Hybrid V8. The #25 car, driven by Connor De Phillippi and Nick Yelloly, retired after an accident.

Despite strong performances in practice, BMW M Team RLL faced bad luck during qualifying. A red flag towards the end of the session prevented Eng and Yelloly from completing their fastest laps. Consequently, they started from sixth and eighth positions on the grid, making it difficult to gain ground on the narrow circuit.

Race Day Struggles

The #24 car, driven by Eng and Krohn, encountered an early drive-through penalty, limiting their potential to move up the ranks. Despite an aggressive strategy, they could only manage a seventh-place finish. Krohn noted that track position is crucial on street circuits and expressed optimism about future races.

Accident Leads to Retirement

The #25 BMW M Hybrid V8 showed promise during the race until a pit stop incident. De Phillippi slid into the tyre barriers while fighting for the lead and later retired after another impact broke the rear suspension. Yelloly reflected on their progress despite starting from the back of the GTP field due to qualifying setbacks.

GTD-PRO Class Performance

In the GTD-PRO class, the #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3, driven by Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers, finished in fifth place. This result added a silver lining to an otherwise challenging weekend for BMW M Motorsport.

Driver Comments

Jesse Krohn commented on their inability to showcase the true pace of their car due to track position challenges and penalties. He remains hopeful about upcoming races. Nick Yelloly highlighted their progress during the race but lamented their inability to convert it into a strong finish.

The next race for BMW M Team RLL is at Watkins Glen, where they achieved victory last year. The team looks forward to improving their performance and securing better results in upcoming events.
