BMW Replaces 6 Series GT With New 5 Series LWB In India

The 6 Series GT was BMW's second highest-selling sedan in FY2024. BMW has discontinued the 6 Series GT in India, following the launch of the new 5 Series. This doesn't come as a surprise as the new 5 Series, in its long wheelbase guise, was meant to address both the outgoing 5 and 6 Series GT customers. In fact, it was the success of the 6 Series GT that convinced BMW to get the new 5 Series in its LWB guise to India.

In FY2024, BMW's 6 Series GT sold 1,428 units, significantly outperforming the previous-gen 5 Series which sold only 1,059 units. The model even outsold popular SUVs like the BMW X3, Land Rover Defender, and Audi Q5. This success highlighted a strong market preference for long-wheelbase sedans.

New 5 Series To Address Market Needs

The new 5 Series aims to cater to former 6 Series GT customers with its long wheelbase design. Initially available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, a diesel variant will be introduced later. Additionally, an M5 performance variant featuring a 727hp plug-in hybrid V8 engine is expected to arrive in India.

The long wheelbase format has clearly worked for BMW, as also seen with models such as the 3 Series Gran Limousine and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Chauffeur-driven buyers in this segment have a clear preference for the additional space and legroom at the rear, which is why the new 5 Series only comes in long wheelbase guise to fill the space left vacant by the 6 Series GT.

BMW's Sedan Line-up

Currently, BMW's sedan line-up in India includes the 2 Series, 3 Series, and newly launched long-wheelbase 5 Series alongside the flagship 7 Series. Both the 5 and 7 series are also available in electric versions, complementing BMW's i4 sedan.

The discontinuation of the 6 Series GT follows its introduction back in 2018 and subsequent facelift in 2021. It was essentially a stretched version of the previous-gen 5 Series designed to offer more rear legroom and comfort.

The decision to discontinue aligns with BMW's strategy to streamline its offerings while addressing customer preferences for spacious sedans. The introduction of a diesel variant for the new long-wheelbase model will further broaden its appeal among Indian buyers.

The success of models like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW’s own Gran Limousine variants underscores this trend towards longer wheelbases among chauffeur-driven buyers who prioritise rear-seat comfort.

This strategic move ensures that BMW continues to meet evolving market demands while maintaining its competitive edge within India's luxury car segment.
