BMW Concept Skytop Unveiled At Concorso di Villa d'Este: Tribute To A More Elegant Time

BMW has pulled the wraps off its latest concept car at Concorso di Villa d'Este at Lake Como in Italy. Dubbed the the BMW Concept Skytop, the targa-top two-seater hearkens back to a more elegant era of BMW car design.

While it may be a one-off car, the BMW Concept Skytop is actually based on one of the firm's current crop of cars, the 8 Series. The two-seater concept sports a custom body on top of the 8 Series which features a semi-open targa-style roof design.

Speaking about the Concept Skytop, Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design said, "The BMW Concept Skytop is a truly unique and exotic design, in the tradition of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It offers a combination of driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level, comparable to its historic ancestors, like the BMW Z8 or BMW 503."

The Concept Skytop from BMW features a rather elegant interpreation of the firm's design language and this is best experienced up front where the two-seater concept vehicle sports an illuminated set of BMW kidney grilles, which are thankfully not the overized monstrosities found on its current crop of production cars.

The grille is flanked by sleek LED headlights while the bonnet of the Concept Skytop features a bit of extra sculpting which gives it a more muscular look while also hinting at the underlying power of the internal combustion engine that sits underneath it.

The roof is a two-piece unit bolts onto the windscreen on one end and the integrated aero bridge which also acts as the frame for the rear window. This rollhoop/aerobridge section and the roof are finished in the same leather material that is draped on the interior of the Concept Skytop which features among other things a crystal, joystick-like gear selector along with brogue-style accents on the seats.

Either side of the rear window sit very visible buttresses with the disitinctive Hofmeister kink on their front edges. These extend to the rear haunche of the concept and along with the central pine (similar to the one on the bonnet), make the Skytop look a lot longer than it really is.

The boot features a small ducktail spoiler that is reminiscent of the Bangle-era 6 Series coupe and the sleek OLED taillights do remind you of the one on the Z8 roadster, which was another Bangle creation. Lower down on the each side of the rear bumper are the oval-shaped tailpipes that once again remind you that the Skytop is a dino burner.

Speaking of the powerplant under the bonnet, BMW has not revealed any details except that it is the most powerful V8 engine in its lineup. THis wording suggests that the BMW Concept Skytop sports a tuned version of BMW's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that produces 626bhp in its most powerful guise.

Thoughts About The BMW Concept Skytop

The BMW Concept Skytop is the firm's first-ever non-electrified concept since the Concept 4 that was reevaled at the Geneva Motor Show (remember whn they were a thing) and show that the Germa marque is not quite ready to go fully gauche to cater to the oversized grille demands of its craziest customers. Hopefully, this shift back to elegance will be seen in more BMWs in the future.
