Bengaluru RTO Seizes Other State Luxury Cars: Here's Why
RTOs in Bengaluru have seized five cars registered outside Karnataka for not paying the required taxes. These vehicles, including an Audi and a Fortuner, were found operating in the city for over a year without fulfilling tax obligations. According to officials, car owners must pay taxes if they use their vehicles in Karnataka for more than a year.
Seized Vehicles and Tax Evasion
C Mallikarjuna, additional commissioner for transport (enforcement), explained, "The seized vehicles were earlier registered in Haryana, Jharkhand, West Bengal and others. Owners were found using cars here for more than a year."
"In some cases, despite obtaining NoC from RTOs, where their vehicles were registered earlier, owners had failed to migrate." He added. This highlights the issue of tax evasion by owners of luxury cars registered outside the state.
The department also impounded motorcycles being used as unauthorised bike taxis during this drive. The enforcement action aims to ensure compliance with local tax regulations and discourage tax evasion practices among vehicle owners.
Increasing Number of Used Cars
Officials noted a rise in people buying used cars registered in Delhi and northern states. "Some people pay hefty sums to buy luxury cars of various brands registered out of the state but evade tax. There is an increasing number of people purchasing used cars registered in Delhi and northern states. We urge them to follow rules by paying tax applicable here," said an official.

The recent crack-down of other state cars will not only improve the earnings for the state through road tax, but other state cars pose a serious security threat as tracking such cars is a headache for the government officials.
