Bengaluru To Chennai In Just Two Hours: New Expressway Set For Year-End Opening
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday that the Bengaluru-Chennai greenfield expressway will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi before December this year. This announcement was made during the state executive meeting of BJP leaders in Bengaluru.
The 262 km-long expressway is expected to significantly cut travel time between the two cities to just two hours. Gadkari had previously stated that the estimated completion date for this project was March 2024. The expressway, costing over Rs 17,930 crore, will traverse Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway Details
The new alignment of the Bengaluru-Chennai highway will link Hoskote in Bengaluru to Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram district, which is 40 km from Chennai. This project is part of the 36 new expressways being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), with its foundation laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022.

The expressway will feature eight lanes for a distance of 240 km, with an elevated stretch covering the remaining 22 km. Nearly 2,650 hectares of land have been acquired for this massive infrastructure project. The construction is divided into three phases: Hoskote to Bethamangala (62.6 km), Bethamangala to Gudipala (85 km), and Gudipala to Sriperumbudur (106 km).
Additional Infrastructure Projects
Gadkari also mentioned efforts to complete the Rs 17,000 crore Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project in Karnataka by December end. This project aims to reduce transient traffic in Bengaluru by helping commuters bypass the city when travelling to nearby towns.
The STRR project is being executed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana initiative by NHAI. It is expected to alleviate up to 30 per cent of transient traffic within Bengaluru. Gadkari has urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to ensure smooth environmental clearances and land acquisition processes to expedite road infrastructure projects.
Additionally, plans are underway for constructing a Bengaluru-Mangaluru greenfield expressway and a Mangaluru-Chennai expressway through Bengaluru. These projects aim to further enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across these regions.
Gadkari's announcements highlight significant strides in improving road infrastructure in southern India. With these projects nearing completion, travel efficiency between major cities is set to improve substantially.
