Bakchis Wins Round 7, Sets Stage For Final Showdown With Deane In Formula Drift
Aurimas Bakchis clinched victory in Round 7 of the Formula DRIFT PRO Championship, narrowing the points gap to leader James Deane. The championship will be decided at Irwindale Speedway in October.The event took place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Utah Motorsports Campus in Grantsville, UT. It was the seventh round of the Formula DRIFT PRO Championship, titled "Type S Elevated" and presented by AutoZone.James Deane from Ireland needed to match Bakchis in points to secure the 2024 FD PRO Championship title due to his significant lead. However, Bakchis defeated Deane in the Top 4 heats and won Round 7. This result means the championship will now be decided at the final round at Irwindale Speedway on October 18-19.Finishing fourth in Utah, Deane's points advantage in his AutoZone Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD decreased from 104 to 74 over second-place Bakchis. Fredric Aasbo from Norway finished second in this round but remains third overall with a 130-point deficit, making it impossible for him to claim his fourth PRO title.Trenton Beechum from the USA secured his first-ever FD PRO podium by finishing third. This marks his best result since joining the championship in 2021. Beechum was previously the 2019 PROSPEC Champion.Hiroya Minowa from Japan finished tenth in Utah but continues to lead the 2024 FD Rookie of the Year race. His Enjuku Racing / Cusco / Yellowspeed Racing Toyota GT86 is currently fourth overall with 406 points, maintaining a 96-point lead over Conor Shanahan from Ireland, who is in eleventh place.
