Bank Holiday Travel: Avoid Common Breakdown Cover Mistakes, Advises Start Rescue
Drivers must ensure they have valid breakdown cover before setting off this Bank Holiday, advises leading provider Start Rescue. Purchasing cover after a breakdown has occurred is fraudulent and ineffective. In June 2024, nearly half (45%) of incidents where Start Rescue couldn't assist were due to customers not having a breakdown policy in place.
Start Rescue's Managing Director, Lee Puffett, highlights the importance of having the correct cover. He states, "Customers buy a 10-mile local tow recovery policy because they don’t normally venture very far, but they will receive a huge shock if they travel a longer distance this Bank Holiday and can’t get the vehicle repaired local to the breakdown."

Additionally, 15% of claims were invalid because customers did not purchase Home Assist cover. Another 11.5% were due to exceeding the 10-mile local tow limit without proper coverage. Furthermore, 16% of incidents involved vehicles without a valid MoT or road tax.
It is crucial to check your breakdown cover's validity and upgrade if necessary before travelling. Some providers require 24 to 72 hours for new policies or mid-term upgrades to become active. Start Rescue mandates only a 24-hour waiting period for policy activation or adjustments.
Puffett adds, "With many breakdown providers, once the mileage limit has been exceeded on a local tow policy, any extra miles plus additional call-outs for a relay if it’s a long distance will be payable by the customer." He further explains that while Start Rescue strives to find cost-effective solutions when service is limited or not covered by the purchased policy, options can become expensive later in the day.
