Audi RS3 Prototype Dominates Nurburgring With New Compact Car Lap Record
Audi Sport has showcased its engineering prowess by smashing the lap record for compact cars at the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife. The newly facelifted Audi RS3 prototype dominated the challenging 20.832 km track in an impressive time of 7:33.123 minutes. This record-breaking achievement leaves the previous title holder, the BMW M2 Coupe, trailing behind by an astonishing 5-second margin.
Behind the wheel of the pre-production RS3 was Audi Sport racing and development driver Frank Stippler, a man no stranger to pushing cars to their limits. The record-breaking prototype boasts a familiar heart – the turbocharged 2.5-liter TFSI five-cylinder engine. However, it's been massaged to deliver a healthy 400hp and 500Nm of torque, providing ample power for those Nurburgring straights.
The Staggering Leap in Performance
The significant improvement in lap time suggests that Audi Sport engineers have made substantial changes beyond just working on the engine. They have focused on enhancing the chassis setup to fully unleash the RS3's agility. A fully variable torque distribution system between the rear wheels allows the car to distribute power precisely where it's needed most during cornering. The dynamic duo of RS sport suspension with optional adaptive dampers and 19-inch ceramic brakes provides the perfect foundation for attacking corners with confidence. An advanced algorithm for the driving dynamics controller ties everything together, ensuring all these systems work in perfect harmony. It's worth noting that the record-breaking lap was achieved on Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires, which offer significantly more grip than your typical road-going rubber.

While the prototype sported a Nürburgring-themed camouflage that masked the finer details of the facelift, some design changes are still evident.
