Anna Lee Fisher Commemorates 40 Years Since Becoming First Mother In Space
Anna Lee Fisher made history on November 8, 1984, as the first mother to journey into space. Her mission, STS-51A, marked a significant milestone in space exploration. Fisher, an astronaut and chemist, owned a Porsche 930 Turbo when she began her training at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Recently, she shared her experiences with Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), reflecting on her career and passion for the brand.
Fisher's fascination with Porsche began in childhood. "I’ve always loved Porsche from the time I was little," she recalled while driving a Porsche 911 Turbo. Her German heritage played a role; her mother and grandmother were from Germany, and an uncle who owned a Porsche often took her on thrilling rides. These experiences fueled her adventurous spirit and love for the brand.

Her aspiration to become an astronaut was sparked at age 12 after hearing Alan Shepard's historic spaceflight on the radio. Despite the male-dominated field, Fisher pursued her dream by starting as a medical doctor, which she believes prepared her well for astronaut training. She joined NASA's program in 1979 and became a mother in 1983.
Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), established in 1984, is the exclusive U.S. importer of several Porsche models including the 911 and Taycan. Headquartered in Atlanta since 1998, PCNA features the first Porsche Experience Center in North America with driver development tracks and business facilities. A second center near Los Angeles offers similar amenities.

A Lasting Legacy
Fisher retired from NASA in 2017 but remains passionate about space exploration and Porsche cars. Her journey from aspiring astronaut to trailblazer continues to inspire many. PCNA recently celebrated Fisher’s achievements by revisiting her remarkable career and enduring love for adventure.
Porsche AG, based in Stuttgart, Germany, indirectly owns PCNA. The company prides itself on its rich racing heritage with over 30,000 motorsport victories worldwide.
Fisher’s story exemplifies how dreams can be achieved through determination and passion. Her contributions to space exploration remain significant as she continues to inspire future generations of explorers.
