American Honda Achieves Strong Sales Growth In September 2024 Despite Supply Challenges

American Honda has surpassed one million sales for 2024 by September, a month earlier than last year. The company reported September sales of 105,527 units, marking an 8.8% increase year-to-date. The Honda brand alone sold 95,601 units in September, showing a 10.2% rise for the third quarter and an over 11.5% increase for the year.

The Acura brand recorded sales of 9,926 units in September. Its SUV sales in the third quarter rose by 5.7% compared to the same period in 2023. American Honda's electrified vehicle sales exceeded 90,000 units in the third quarter, achieving their best-ever quarterly performance for electric and hybrid models.

Year-to-date figures show American Honda sold a total of 1,056,495 units, with cars accounting for 338,198 units and trucks for 718,297 units. This represents a growth of 0.2% in car sales and a significant 13.4% increase in truck sales.

In September alone, total sales reached 105,527 units despite a decline of 8.6%. Car sales dropped by 21%, while truck sales saw a slight decrease of 2.1%. Acura's total sales were down by 21.7%, with car sales falling by nearly half at 48.6%, and truck sales decreasing by 9.2%.

Lance Woelfer, vice president of Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., stated: "Our sales momentum has continued through the third quarter with strong demand for Honda and Acura SUVs, and growing sales of electrified models." He noted that supply issues due to EV manufacturing preparations and Hurricane Helene impacted their operations but emphasized their flexible strategy in offering various fuel-efficient models.

Brand Highlights

The Pilot model saw a remarkable increase with year-to-date sales up by 25%, third-quarter growth at 38%, and September alone witnessing a surge of 62%. The TrailSport variant contributed over 16% to the mix for the year.

The HR-V achieved its best-ever third-quarter performance with a rise of 16%, contributing to a year-to-date increase of nearly 32%. The CR-V remained Honda's top seller with over half being hybrid-electric models.

Product Developments

Civic's year-to-date sales rose by 28%, with its new hybrid version making up nearly one-fifth of its total sales mix. Despite EV production preparations affecting Accord’s availability in Ohio, more than half its sales were hybrid-electric.

The Odyssey maintained its lead as the top minivan in retail sales with an impressive third-quarter growth of 18%. Ridgeline also posted its best-ever third-quarter results.

Acura's Product News

The Prologue model had another strong month with September sales reaching 3,785 units. Both Prologue and Civic Hybrid have been named semifinalists on NACTOY’s "Best of 2025" list due to their innovative features.

The Integra led its segment with over 1,500 units sold despite challenges from EV production preparations in Ohio. MDX achieved strong turn rates even with limited inventory, selling over 3,200 units in September.

The RDX saw an impressive year-to-date growth of 18%, selling over 3,600 units last month as dealers received the new model for sale soon after release.

The all-electric ZDX continued gaining traction as it ranked third among premium midsize BEV CUVs with over 970 units sold.
