Alvis Car Company Debuts Graber Drophead, Merging Classic Charm With Modern Tech
The Alvis Car Company, with a legacy spanning over a century, has recently completed the next model in its esteemed Continuation Series, the Graber Drophead. This convertible grand tourer, one of only two being hand-assembled, is destined for a Japanese enthusiast, underscoring the brand's significant appeal in Japan. The vehicle is not just a nod to the past but a blend of historical design and modern enhancements such as power steering, air conditioning, electronic engine management, and superior brakes. This fusion of period style with contemporary reliability, comfort, performance, and safety makes the Graber Drophead an attractive option for touring enthusiasts.
Each vehicle in the Continuation Series is meticulously crafted at Alvis' Kenilworth Works, utilizing an extensive archive of drawings and records to ensure fidelity to original designs while adhering to current emission standards. The Graber Drophead is powered by one of Alvis' historic straight-six three-litre engines, which have been carefully stored since the company's relocation from Coventry 57 years ago. These engines have been significantly enhanced with modern technology including fuel injection and CNC machining, resulting in a 32 percent power increase to 172bhp and a potential top speed of 120mph.

The construction of the Graber Drophead's lightweight aluminium body is an art in itself, requiring over 2,500 hours of handcrafting over traditional wooden bucks or cutting-edge 3D printed formers. Complementing its lively acceleration is a five-speed manual gearbox. The interior boasts Connolly leather and a three-layer hood lined with English wool cloth, all handcrafted by Alvis' skilled artisans. Before its delivery, each car is rigorously tested on Alvis' Warwickshire test routes.
Looking ahead to 2024, Alvis has announced plans to release three new cars, including two more Graber Dropheads and the first pre-war Lancefield model in the Continuation Series, destined for a Far East customer. Alan Stote, the owner of The Alvis Car Company, commends the Graber Drophead for its stunning aesthetics, impeccable engine performance, and luxurious interior. He emphasizes that unlike many continuation cars, the Graber Drophead is designed for road enjoyment. The pricing for these exquisite vehicles starts at £295,000 for pre-war series models and £323,000 for the Graber Super Coupé, each accompanied by a 3-year warranty.
Alvis has been at the forefront of automotive innovation since its inception, boasting several firsts such as designing and racing the first front-wheel-drive model in 1925 and creating the world's first all-synchromesh gearbox in 1933. Today, the company continues to uphold its tradition of excellence by producing high-quality Continuation Series cars that comply with global emission regulations. In addition to its manufacturing prowess, Alvis collaborates with Meiji Sangyo for distribution in Japan, further solidifying its presence in the international market.
