Upgrade From Hatchback To SUV In India: Top Affordable Options
SUVs are becoming the preferred choice for car buyers in India, with the segment holding over 50% market share. As customers have more disposable income and are willing to increase their budget for new vehicles, the SUV segment is expected to grow further.
Even first-time buyers who would have chosen entry-level hatchbacks like Maruti Alto or Hyundai i10 a decade ago are now opting for SUVs. If you're planning to upgrade from a hatchback to an SUV without spending more than ₹7 lakh, here are four affordable models to consider.

Nissan Magnite
Launched in 2020, the Nissan Magnite is a sub-compact SUV and one of the most affordable options in India. With prices starting at ₹6 lakh (ex-showroom), it also offers automatic transmission variants under ₹10 lakh. The 1.0-litre petrol engine comes in naturally aspirated and turbo versions, with power outputs ranging from 71 bhp to 99 bhp and torque between 96 Nm and 150 Nm.
The engine is paired with 5-speed manual and AMT gearboxes as well as a new CVT transmission introduced last year. The base model features dual airbags, seatbelt warning, power windows, and single-zone climate control.

Renault Kiger
The Renault Kiger is the French automaker's first entry into the sub-compact SUV segment in India and shares similarities with the Nissan Magnite. Both models are similarly priced, providing an affordable option for those upgrading from hatchbacks.
The base manual variant of the Kiger starts at ₹6 lakh (ex-showroom), while automatic versions can be purchased for under ₹10 lakh. It has the same 1.0-litre petrol engine, transmission choices, and output figures as the Magnite. However, neither SUV offers a sunroof – a popular feature among car buyers.

Tata Punch
The Tata Punch is another option for those seeking an entry-level SUV from a well-established brand. As one of the best-selling cars in India, it's priced from ₹6.13 lakh (ex-showroom) – making it more affordable than some popular hatchbacks.
Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, it comes with 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options and produces 87 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque. The base variant includes dual airbags, single-zone climate control, and rear parking sensors. Notably, the Punch is the only SUV in this segment available in electric and CNG versions.

Hyundai Exter
The Hyundai Exter is another small SUV that rivals the Tata Punch and starts at ₹6.13 lakh (ex-showroom). It also offers an automatic transmission option for under ₹10 lakh. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with manual and AMT gearboxes, its base variant features six airbags as standard, single-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and a digital instrument cluster.

These four affordable SUVs provide excellent options for those looking to upgrade from hatchbacks without breaking the bank. Each model offers unique features and performance capabilities to suit different preferences and budgets.
