Expanding Hybrid Options: Maruti Suzuki’s Strategy For Sustainability

In a strategic move towards achieving carbon neutrality, Maruti Suzuki is setting its sights on innovating hybrid technology for its compact car segment.

The company's leadership, in discussions following their financial results for the fiscal year, highlighted ongoing efforts to bring more affordable hybrid solutions to smaller vehicles, while also considering plug-in hybrid options for larger models.

Affordable Hybrid Solutions On The Horizon

R.C. Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, pointed out the high costs associated with current hybrid technology, such as that employed in Toyota hybrids, which result in increased final vehicle prices, partly due to a 43 per cent GST rate.

Suzuki Japan is reportedly hard at work developing a more cost-effective hybrid technology aimed at improving fuel efficiency for compact cars. This initiative, coupled with a potential reduction in GST rates, promises to enhance the mileage of small cars significantly.

Although specific timelines for the launch of these affordable hybrids were not disclosed, Bhargava's comments indicate that the rollout is contingent on favourable GST adjustments and the successful development of the technology by Suzuki Japan's engineers.

Exploring Plug-In Hybrid Options

As Maruti Suzuki broadens its product range to include higher-priced mid-size SUVs, the possibility of introducing plug-in hybrid technology is also being explored. Hishahi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki's Managing Director, mentioned that while there are no immediate plans to launch plug-in hybrids in India.

This potential expansion into plug-in hybrids would complement Maruti Suzuki's existing hybrid offerings, including the accessible series hybrid technology currently under development and the strong parallel-hybrid systems derived from Toyota.

The push towards affordable hybrid technology coincides with expressions of interest from senior government officials in reducing taxes or cess for hybrid vehicles in India. This aligns with Maruti Suzuki's ambitious goal of achieving a 25 per cent penetration of hybrid vehicles in its sales by FY-31, translating to sales of 750,000 to 1 million hybrid cars.

DriveSpark Thinks

At present, Maruti Suzuki offers hybrid technology in its mid-size premium vehicles, the Grand Vitara and Invicto, with expectations of significant sales growth in this segment from FY-26.

As Maruti Suzuki continues to explore various avenues to reduce carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency, the company's focus on developing hybrid technologies indicates a significant step forward in its long-term vision of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
