Fourth For Acura, WTRAndretti At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
At the recent Motul Course de Monterey event, held under the sunny skies of central California at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the #40 Acura ARX-06, fielded by Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Global, showcased an impressive performance. Starting from eighth on the grid, the team's drivers, Louis Deletraz and Jordan Taylor, skillfully navigated through the competition to secure a fourth-place finish. This achievement marks a significant step forward for the team in the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
The sister car, #10 Acura ARX-06, also made notable strides during the race. Despite an early setback that placed drivers Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque a lap down due to a penalty and necessitated an off-sequence pit stop, the team fought back valiantly. Albuquerque's strategic fuel conservation allowed them to make up ground and ultimately finish in sixth place.
In the GTD category, Gradient Racing's #66 Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 faced its challenges head-on. Drivers Stevan McAleer and Sheena Monk contended with a late-race penalty for contact and an early-race yellow that put them a lap down. Despite these hurdles and a strategy that didn't pan out as hoped due to a lack of caution periods, the team finished 12th.
Jordan Taylor reflected on the race with optimism, noting the progress made from their starting position to finishing fourth. Despite facing some pace challenges throughout the weekend, Taylor praised the team's execution and strategy during the race.
Filipe Albuquerque shared his perspective on a challenging day, emphasizing the aggressive approach required to recover from their early penalty. He highlighted the car's speed and his relentless effort to improve their position throughout the race.
Stevan McAleer expressed disappointment over the outcome but acknowledged the team's pace and strategic efforts. He pointed out the need for improvement in long-run pace and tire management.
The Acura ARX-06 stands as a testament to innovation in hybrid-powered racing technology. Developed by Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC US) in collaboration with chassis supplier ORECA and featuring a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with a sophisticated hybrid system, this vehicle represents a significant leap forward in racing engineering. The hybrid system includes a Bosch MGU and electronics that store energy in a battery pack developed by Williams Advanced Engineering. This setup allows for power recuperation from the rear axle and brakes, controlled by HRC US-developed software.
The design of the ARX-06 also benefits from a close collaboration between Acura Styling Studio and HRC's aerodynamicists. Together, they have crafted a vehicle that not only excels in aerodynamic performance but also incorporates Acura's current production vehicle styling cues.
Looking ahead, the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will continue its journey eastward to Michigan for the Detroit Grand Prix on June 1. This event marks the second and final temporary street circuit on this season's schedule, promising more thrilling racing action from Acura and HRC US.
