Tourbillon Platform Redefines Bugatti's Future In Hyper Sports Cars
The latest episode of the 'A New Era' docuseries, now on YouTube, explores the innovative Bugatti platform that underpins the Tourbillon1. This new design showcases Bugatti's commitment to engineering excellence and sets a foundation for future hyper sports cars. Bugatti has consistently pushed boundaries over its 115-year history, and this new platform continues that tradition.
Bugatti's legacy is built on innovation, and the Tourbillon represents a leap forward. The Veyron and Chiron² platforms served Bugatti for two decades, but the Tourbillon's architecture redefines automotive excellence. Emilio Scervo, CTO of Bugatti Rimac, stated, "We have always thought about how we could do it even better, how could we create a design that is even more beautiful than the Chiron."
The Tourbillon's powertrain is a marvel of engineering. It combines a naturally aspirated V16 engine with three electric motors. This setup allows for optimal integration of technical features. Five of eight radiators are positioned at the front to efficiently cool various components. Two radiators channel air directly to the engine, while others cool the cabin and electrical parts.
A key feature of the new platform is its centrally housed T-shaped battery. This 24kWh unit provides 800 HP and over 60 km of electric range. Positioned centrally, it ensures a balanced center of gravity and acts as part of the monocoque structure. The architecture also includes a fixed seating position with adjustable pedals and steering wheel to reduce height and weight.
The rear houses the V16 engine paired with an electric motor. Its length required innovative packaging solutions, bringing it closer to the driver. Fuel tanks were relocated to maintain control over wheelbase and length while maximizing interior space. An integrated crash structure within the diffuser optimizes weight without needing a full rear beam.
The electric axle behind the luggage compartment includes two 250kW motors for four-wheel drive capability and torque vectoring. This enhances performance by directing torque to either front wheel as needed. The Tourbillon's design reflects a cohesive vision despite contributions from many talented individuals.
Commitment to Excellence
The Tourbillon is more than just a hyper sports car; it's a testament to Bugatti's dedication to excellence guiding its future endeavors. The platform signifies a new chapter marked by optimization and performance levels never seen before in Bugatti's history.
Emilio Scervo expressed pride in how unified the car feels: "What I’m most proud of is how the overall design of the car feels like the work of a single hand." Despite many contributors, starting from scratch allowed for something cohesive as if crafted by one vision.
This new platform will remain central as Bugatti moves into its next era, influencing everything they do from now on.
