India's Car Dealers Struggle with Inventory Glut - 7.9 Lakh Cars Remain Unsold

A new report states that car dealerships, including major brands like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, are dealing with a significant inventory backlog. As per data released by FADA, dealers hold about 790,000 vehicles in stock at their facilities. These vehicles, valued at INR 79,000 crore would take dealers 80-85 days to clear out of their lots.

This challenging glut of vehicles at dealerships has been building up since May this year and is a result of aggressive dispatches from car manufacturers coupled with declining sales.

Increased car prices thanks to a shift towards newer models and inflation have contributed to the current glut in inventory levels. Data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) this month highlighted a year-over-year sales decrease of 18.81 per cent in September compared to the same month in 2023.

One of the major causes for this glut in inventory at car dealerships across India is the fact that the demand for cars in the INR 10 lakh to INR 25 lakh price range, which has been the main source of revenue for dealers over the past two to three years has reduced quite significantly, creating cash flow concerns for dealers.

Another reason for the downturn in numbers is that people prefer the newer cars being launched by carmakers over the past few years. While older models face higher inventory challenges, newer models like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and the recently launched Tata Curvv avoid such issues due to steady interest and demand for these newer vehicles.

The biggest reason for the drop in sales though could be the weather. A long and hot summer has been followed by a heavy monsoon has seen customers stay away from dealerships with many postponing car purchases for times when the weather wouldn't be a problem.

Top brands like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai could have the largest dealer inventory left over. However, brands with lower sales volumes, such as Nissan and Citroen, might have a higher inventory percentage relative to their monthly sales thanks to the ever-present push by manufacturers to produce more vehicles at their manufacturing facilities.

However, not all is doom and gloom. Dealers are hopeful that sales in October and November will improve significantly thanks to the festive Dusshera Diwali season, potentially reducing inventory. With more stable weather conditions expected, dealers are hoping for an uptick in sales in the coming months.

Thoughts About The Car Dealership Level Glut

The excess amount of cars currently populating dealer lots across India shows just how big the difference is between the wholesale numbers released by manufacturers and the actual cars sold by dealers in India.

The situation calls for strategic adjustments to address the market dynamics effectively and both dealers and manufacturers must revisit their strategies to manage this inventory glut and to ensure that messes like this are avoided in the future as they could lead to financial ruin and other issues for the dealers.
