2025 Toyota Sienna Launches Innovative Advanced Rear Seat Reminder System For Enhanced Safety
The 2025 Toyota Sienna introduces the Advanced Rear Seat Reminder as a standard feature across all models in the U.S. This innovative technology uses millimeter-wave radar to detect movement inside the vehicle after the driver exits. Alerts escalate from a gentle chime to honking if movement is detected in the second or third row.
This system, unique to Toyota, employs a 60GHz radar sensor positioned above the headliner. It scans for movement in specific areas of the second and third rows. If it detects motion after the ignition is turned off, the driver's door is opened and closed, and the vehicle is locked, it activates hazard lights and a door lock chime.

If movement persists 90 seconds after this initial alert, the horn will sound as part of an escalation warning. The system does not require the Toyota app for these alerts. However, with a Safety Connect subscription, users can receive notifications through the Toyota app, SMS messages, and automated phone calls.
The millimeter-wave radar offers higher resolution than ultrasonic systems and can detect movement under objects like blankets. This capability makes it effective in low-light conditions compared to camera-based monitors. The technology was previewed as a concept in 2022 and has since evolved into a comprehensive safety feature.
Unlike some competitors that offer limited trial periods for telematics functions, Toyota's app-based features remain active for up to 10 years or until 4G connectivity ends. This extended functionality provides customers with long-term benefits without additional costs.
Development and Collaboration
The Advanced Rear Seat Reminder originated from an internal competition at Toyota Motor North America. It received support from various software, hardware, R&D teams, and suppliers within Toyota globally. This collaboration led to over 40 patent applications related to this technology area.
Despite its advanced capabilities, drivers must ensure no occupants are left inside vehicles. The system's functionality may be limited under certain conditions and requires an active Safety Connect subscription for phone or app-based alerts.
This feature showcases Toyota's commitment to safety innovation through global teamwork among its engineers. Specifications apply to U.S. and Canadian market models of the 2025 Sienna but may vary by region.
