2025 BMW R 12 S Launches As A Modern Homage To The Iconic R 90 S Motorcycle
BMW Motorrad USA has introduced the 2025 R 12 S, a nod to the legendary R 90 S from 1973. The R 90 S was notable for its 67 hp engine, reaching speeds of 124 mph, and featuring double disk front brakes. Designed by Hans A. Muth, it was the first production motorcycle with an aerodynamic handlebar fairing.
The R 90 S gained fame through racing victories, including a class win at the 1976 Production TT on the Isle of Man by Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne. Steve McLaughlin also won the prestigious Daytona race that year on an R 90 S, with Reg Pridmore becoming the first AMA Superbike Champion.
The new BMW R 12 S captures the essence of its predecessor while incorporating modern elements. It features a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with a tinted windshield, a seat with contrast stitching, and Lava Orange Metallic paint reminiscent of the R 90 S Daytona Orange from 1975.
Alexander Buckan, Head of BMW Motorrad Design, explains: "The defining design elements of our R 12 S include the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with the tinted windshield, the seat with contrast stitching, and the Lava Orange Metallic paint finish as a nod to the legendary R 90 S Daytona Orange from 1975."
The R 12 S is powered by a 1,170 cc two-cylinder air/oil-cooled Boxer engine producing 109 hp at 7,000 rpm. It features a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive. The bike includes BMW Motorrad ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control for enhanced safety.
Standard equipment includes Hill Start Control, Gear Shift Assist Pro, Heated Grips, Cruise Control, and LED lighting. The adaptive cornering light Headlight Pro improves visibility during night rides.
Customization Options
The R 12 S offers extensive customization options through Original BMW Motorrad Accessories. These include titanium exhaust systems and navigation preparation. Factory-installed options such as Tire Pressure Control and Intelligent Emergency Call are also available.
The bike's chassis consists of a steel trellis frame with adjustable upside-down forks at the front and a cast aluminum single-sided swingarm at the rear. It features twin disc front brakes with radial calipers for effective stopping power.
Performance and Dimensions
The R 12 S accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 134 mph. It has a total length of approximately 83.8 inches and weighs around 485 lbs when ready for road use.
The fuel tank holds up to 4.2 gallons, ensuring ample range for long rides. The bike's seat height is set at about 31.3 inches for comfortable riding posture.
