2024 Volvo XC90 Secures Prestigious IIHS Top Safety Pick+ In Rigorous Crash Tests

The 2024 Volvo XC90 midsize luxury SUV has been awarded the 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To achieve this accolade, vehicles must excel in several crash tests, including the moderate overlap test, small overlap front and updated side tests, pedestrian front crash prevention, and headlight assessment.

"Safety is at the core of everything we do at Volvo Cars," said Mike Cottone, Head of USA and Canada at Volvo Cars. "As part of our company’s longstanding commitment to safety, we constantly strive to raise safety levels. The Volvo XC90 reflects our safety legacy, and we are proud it was recognized by the IIHS given our shared dedication to the advancement of automotive safety with the goal of reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries."

Volvo XC90 Wins IIHS Safety Award

The award-winning XC90 offers six or seven seats and ensures premium comfort for all passengers. It includes various standard safety features such as forward collision warnings, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping aid, and lane departure warning. These features are integral to Volvo Cars' commitment to occupant safety.

In its evaluation of the Volvo XC90, the IIHS concluded that it demonstrated solid structural performance in the updated moderate overlap test. The vehicle also provided excellent passenger protection for drivers and received good ratings in both the small overlap front and updated side tests. The updated evaluation focuses on injuries most frequently seen in rear-seat occupants.

Volvo Car Group recorded a record-breaking core operating profit of SEK 25.6 billion for 2023. Revenue reached an all-time high of SEK 399.3 billion with global sales hitting a record 708,716 cars. This financial success underscores Volvo's strong market presence and operational efficiency.

Global Presence and Future Goals

Founded in 1927, Volvo Cars is now one of the most recognised car brands globally with sales in over 100 countries. It is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm under "VOLCAR B". The company's purpose is "For life. To give people the freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way." This mission aligns with their goal to become a fully electric car maker by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

As of December 2023, Volvo Cars employed about 43,400 full-time employees worldwide. Their head office along with product development and marketing functions are primarily based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Production plants are located in Gothenburg; Ghent (Belgium); South Carolina (US); Chengdu; Daqing; Taizhou (China). Additionally, R&D centres are situated in Gothenburg and Shanghai (China).

The moderate overlap test was updated in 2022 to include new metrics focusing on rear-safety by simulating frontal offset crashes between two vehicles of similar weight at just under 40 miles per hour. This update aims to better replicate real-world crash scenarios.

The IIHS found that based on extensive testing, the XC90 met their stringent requirements for rear-seat occupant protection. This recognition highlights Volvo's dedication to advancing automotive safety standards.

This award reinforces Volvo Cars' reputation for prioritising safety across its vehicle lineup while continuously striving to enhance protection for all occupants.
