Porsche Englewood, Louisville, And Gaudin Porsche Win At 2024 Classic Restoration Challenge

Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) has revealed the winners of the 2024 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. The competition, now in its fourth year, saw entries from PCNA's East, South-Central, and West sales regions. Judging took place at regional events over the summer, culminating in the finals at the Petersen Automotive Museum on October 4th.

For this year's challenge, Porsche Centres across the U.S. competed in three categories: Preservation, Restoration, and Individualization. A new addition to this year's event was the selection of an overall Grand National Champion from among the category winners. Additionally, a People's Choice award was determined by public voting and a panel of VIP judges that included media personalities and industry experts.

Porsche Englewood emerged as the Grand National Champion with their 1985 911 Carrera backdate tribute named "1971 McQueen Gulf #20 S/T." This project involved transforming a classic vehicle into a tribute to Steve McQueen's iconic car from the movie *Le Mans* (1971). The team collaborated with a client to reimagine it as a 1971 Nürburgring S/T race car.

The aim was to create a daily driver that could also perform on the track. They used genuine Porsche parts and enhancements from the Porsche Motorsport catalogue. The modifications included upgrading a 964 engine to 3.8L with internal throttle bodies and modernizing the transmission with a hydraulic clutch for better acceleration.

Significant visual changes were made as well. The car features custom livery with hand-painted stripes, widened fenders, and tucked bumpers. Inside, Alcantara headliner, pepita cloth seats, a custom steering wheel, and an upgraded Porsche Classic PCCM radio were added.

Porsche Louisville won both the Restoration category and People's Choice award with their work on a 1977 Porsche 930 Turbo. Acquired from its original owner's estate, this car had not been driven for 15 years. Restoring it required extensive work to bring it back to its former glory.

The restoration process involved draining all fluids and checking for internal engine damage. Every component was inspected to ensure no hidden issues would affect performance. The engine was rebuilt to match its original specifications, restoring its performance to that of 1977.

The suspension was also fully rebuilt to regain its sharp handling characteristics. Electrical systems were overhauled for reliability. After mechanical work was completed, the car was stripped down and repainted in its original Peru Red colour.

Preservation: Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas

Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas took top honours in the Preservation category for their work on what was initially thought to be a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo-Look Cabriolet with a turbo spoiler. Upon arrival at Gaudin Porsche, it was discovered that this vehicle was originally an M491 Targa.

The team worked meticulously to restore it to its original configuration. They conducted compression tests on the engine and cleaned out the fuel system before replacing aftermarket shocks with genuine ones. The interior received attention too; carpets were steam-cleaned and leather reconditioned.

A donor Targa bar was acquired for proper fitment and welded into place while new lenses replaced old ones using genuine parts. This is Gaudin's second consecutive win in this category after securing People’s Choice at Rennsport Reunion last year.

"Congratulations to this year’s Restoration Challenge winners," said Jonathan Sieber from Porsche Classic. "The skill demonstrated speaks volumes about passion for past and future Porsches."
