1937 Delahaye Type 135 Secures Prestigious Best Of Show At The Quail 2024

The 2024 edition of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, crowned a 1937 Delahaye Type 135 as the "Best of Show" winner. Owned by Sam and Emily Mann, this vehicle was inducted into the Rolex Circle of Champions at The Quail Golf Club. The event attracted automotive enthusiasts, industry figures, and motorsport legends.

Guests enjoyed gourmet food from five pavilions and award-winning wines and champagnes. Live music and entertainment added to the festive atmosphere. Renowned car collector Magnus Walker participated in a Fireside Chat moderated by Philip Kadoorie.

The event showcased groundbreaking automotive technology with 21 vehicle debuts. Highlights included the Lamborghini Temerario, Maserati GT2 Stradale, Rimac Nevera R, Cadillac Opulent Velocity Concept, Acura Performance EV Concept and Integra Type S HRC Prototype. Other notable unveilings were the Hennessey F5 Stealth Series and Rolls Royce Phantom Scintilla.

North American debuts featured the Bugatti Tourbillion and Gordon Murray T.50s Niki Lauda and T.33 Spider. These vehicles highlighted cutting-edge design and engineering from leading manufacturers.

The event celebrated four unique featured classes. The 30th Anniversary of Koenigsegg showcased hypercars renowned for speed and technology. The 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 911 Turbo (930) highlighted a German sports car that redefined its segment. One-hundred Years of MG celebrated the British brand's centennial, while a Tribute to World Rally Cars honoured racing legends from the World Rally Championship.

Seven traditional classes displayed vehicles from various eras, including futuristic concepts. This diversity underscored the event's commitment to honouring all aspects of the automotive industry.

Awards and Recognition

Other prestigious awards included the Spirit of The Quail for a 1949 MG TC owned by Aaron Shelby and the Hagerty Drivers Foundation Award for a 1963 Jaguar E-Type FHC owned by Buzz & Julia Lynn. A full list of winners is available on the event website.

The winning Delahaye Type 135 originally served as an open-wheel race car with a revolutionary 12-cylinder engine capable of 240 horsepower. Historian Andre Vaucourt believes it was driven by Renee Dreyfus in several Grand Prix races before being sold to Marius Franay for new coachwork.
