Xiaomi SU7 Revealed - Phonemaker Beats Apple To The Punch With First EV

Tech giant Xiaomi, best known for its array of phones and other gadgets, has stepped into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan. The electric XIaomi SU7 sedan will be offered in three trim levels - SU7, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max.

The reveal of Xiaomi SUV7 comes two and a half years after the company declared its intent to join the EV race. However, the official reveal of the Xiaomi XU7 is still not official as the details about the new EV were revealed by a Chinese government regulatory agency.

Xiaomi SU7

The Xiaomi SU7, previously known under the codename MS11, is an electric sedan with dimensions spanning 4,997mm in length, 1,963mm in width, and 1,455mm in height. The SUV7's wheelbase is a sizeable 3,000mm.

Xiaomi's EV will be available with two wheel options, 19" and 20", which are fitted with 245/45 R19 and 245/40 R20 tyres respectively. The base SU7 model weighs in at 1,980kg, whereas the Pro and Max variants weigh 2,205kg.

Xiaomi SU7 Max

The Xiaomi SU7 will be offered with two powertrain options: a rear-wheel drive setup with a 295bhp electric motor and an all-wheel drive version with a maximum combined power output of 664bhp. The Xiaomi SU7's lower trim has a top speed capped at 210km/h. In contrast, the higher-spec models can reach a top speed of 265 km/h.

The lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack for the more affordable trim is supplied by BYD, while the pricier option features an NMC pack manufactured by CATL. However, details about the range of these battery packs are still under wraps.

A unique feature of the Xiaomi SU7 is its lidar system installed behind the front windshield. The car also includes a camera on the B pillar, suggesting that face recognition unlocking functionality may be part of the package for this Chinese EV.

The design of the SU7 is a weird mix of McLaren, Porsche and Tesla. The headlights look like they've been borrowed from a McLaren supercar while the overall shape is somewhat reminiscent of the Tesla Model 3 with a few bits of Porsche Taycan thrown in for garnish. The connected taillights and the snazzy wheels make this electric sedan (cough, not an SUV, cough) a somewhat unique proposition for buyers.

The in-car system of the SU7 is powered by Xiaomi's HyperOS, an in-house developed operating system that can power both smartphones and cars. Xiaomi only recently revealed HyperOS with the launch of its flagship Xiaomi 14 Series.

Interstingly, and quite expectedly, the Xiaomi SU7 will not be manufactured by Xiaomi but instead by Chinese state-owned vehicle manufacturer Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd. (BAIC). BAIC is the sixth-largest carmaker in China and currently also manufactures cars for Mercedes and Hyundai for sale in the country.

Reports suggest that mass production of Xiaomi SU7 is set to commence in December 2023, with deliveries expected to start in February 2024.

Thoughts About The Xiaomi SU7

Xiaomi's SU7 sees the tech giant move into the EV space for the very first time and signals the tech giant's commitment to expanding its product portfolio and making a mark in the booming Chinese EV industry. Whether or not we ever manage to see a Xiaomi SU7 in India is not clear given the current geo-political tensions between India and China.
