Check Out This Willys-Inspired Mahindra Thar – Collapsible Windscreen, Tube Doors & More
The Mahindra Thar is among the most iconic SUVs in India and the second generation of the Thar SUV turned out to be an even more successful and well-rounded product.
Furthermore, the second-generation Mahindra Thar continues to be one of the most modification-friendly vehicles available in the Indian market and many components manufacturers provide numerous bolt-on customisation kits for the SUV.
That being said, there are numerous examples of modified Thar SUVs in India and some customers have spent more money on modifications than the total cost of the vehicle itself. However, this particular customisation job has turned the second-generation Thar SUV into a Willys Jeep.
Diving into details, this second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV has been modified by Mangalore-based KAM Customs and the customised Thar looks more basic than the base version of the second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV with its chopped roof and other design elements or the lack of it.
For starters, KAM Customs completely removed the top section of the second-generation Thar SUV for a very air feeling. On top of that, KAM Customs also equipped the SUV with a collapsible windscreen and a pair of metal tube doors with a metal section in the middle.
Though these modifications may look simple and easy, in reality, these modifications required meticulous planning as the roofs, doors and windscreen are part of structural components and removing these parts will affect the structural rigidity of the SUV.
While these modifications may seem a little dangerous due to lack of rollover protection, this particular example has been built for the paved roads as the vehicle will be used for campaigning purposes during elections and these modifications allow the candidate to better connect with the people.
Also, Mahindra recently introduced the RWD variant of the Thar SUV in India with an aggressive price tag of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Moreover, this variant will be suitable for those who are fond of Thar's looks but not keen on off-roading. On top of that, the variant also comes with a more frugal 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel engine with 117bhp of power and 300Nm of torque.

Considering that this particular customisation was done with one particular requirement, it is hard to fault the overall execution. However, without proper rollover protection, we do not recommend any such modifications and we urge our fellow readers to check with the local RTO before making any modification to your vehicle.
