Toyota Showcases Special Purpose Hilux For Indian Army – Check Out All Details Here

Earlier, the Indian Army started using the Toyota Hilux pick-up SUVs after undergoing a rigorous selection process by the Army's Technical Evaluation Committee. Furthermore, the Hilux has always carried a reputation for being one of the most reliable SUVs - A reputation that is worth having.

Now, at the ongoing North Tech Symposium 2023 (NTS), an annual tech-showcase jointly conducted by Northern Command of the Indian Army, Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers and IIT Jammu, Toyota showcased two special purpose Hilux SUVs to the Indian Army.

Hilux For Indian Army Range

That being said, Toyota seems to have conducted a comprehensive study on the requirements of the Indian Army. As a result, the Japanese automaker even made some modifications to the Hilux SUV through its external vendor to meet the requirements of the Indian Army.

As per these requirements, Toyota showcased two variations of the Hilux pickup SUVs at the North Tech Symposium 2023. These variations include Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) and Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV).

Hilux For Indian Army

While the Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) will be used to provide essential servicing in remote locations of the Indian Army, the Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV) will be used for rescue operations, emergency situations and firefighting.

That being said, Toyota earlier revised the prices for all variants of the Hilux pick-up SUV in India. Moreover, the base 'Standard' variant of the Japanese pick-up SUV received a sizeable price cut. As a result, prices for the Toyota Hilux now start at just Rs 30.40 lakh (ex-showroom).

However, prices for the 'High' trim level of the Hilux have been hiked and the manual and automatic variants are now priced at Rs 37.15 lakh and Rs 37.90 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively.

The Toyota Hilux is powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. Also, buyers can specify this powertrain with either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. It is also worth mentioning that the torque is limited to 420Nm in the manual variant.

To improve off-road capability, the Toyota Hilux also features a robust 4WD system with a low-range transfer case, electronic differential locks and a limited-slip differential. Toyota also claims that the Hilux pick-up SUV can wade through 700mm of water.

Thoughts: Given the reputation and the rugged build quality of the Toyota Hilux pick-up SUV, we expect the army to purchase more Hilux SUVs in the future. Also, we expect Hilux pickup SUVs to suit the harsh terrains of the Himalayas.
