Top 5 Things You Need To Know About The Toyota Hilux Hybrid – Efficiency, Reliability & More
In a bid to overcome stricter emission regulations in Europe, Toyota has introduced a new hybrid powertrain in the Hilux pickup. As such, here are the top 5 things you need to know about the Toyota Hilux MHEV.
Engine
The newly introduced Toyota Hilux MHEV continues to use the same tried-and-tested 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine as the previous model. However, changes have been made to incorporate the mild hybrid system to improve efficiency and lower emissions.

Mild Hybrid Tech
The mild-hybrid tech in the new Toyota Hilux MHEV pick comes in the form of a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup. This setup consists of a new battery pack, an electric motor and a few other supporting components.
Advantages
Thanks to the new mild-hybrid system in the Toyota Hilux MHEV, the automaker claims that the model is now able to return 10 per cent better fuel efficiency than diesel-only powertrain-equipped variants of the Hilux pickup. Also, the hybrid tech has helped the automaker reduce tailpipe emissions.

Off-Roading & Reliability
According to Toyota, the integration of mild-hybrid tech has not affected the off-roading capability or reliability of the Hilux hybrid pickup. This according to Toyota is because of carefully integrating the mild-hybrid system into the Hilux pickup. In fact, the water-wading depth of the Hilux MHEV stands at 700mm.
Drivability
Thanks to the mild hybrid tech, the Toyota Hilux MHEV pickup comes with enhanced torque assist, smoother start/stop function, and recovering otherwise wasted energy through regen braking. All these improve the driveability of the model in real-world conditions.
Thoughts About The New Toyota Hilux MHEV
The newly introduced mild-hybrid diesel engine in the Toyota Hilux is expected to not only lower emissions but it will also improve the fuel efficiency figures of the model. Also, we expect this new powertrain to have a positive effect on the drivability of the Hilux SUV.
Since, the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner SUV share powertrain options, we also expect this new mild-hybrid diesel engine to be available in the Fortuner SUV as well. However, we are not sure when this new powertrain will make it to the Indian market.
