Toyota Hilux MHEV Introduced In Europe – Automaker Claims 10 Per Cent Better Fuel Efficiency
Though pollution caused by automobiles is only a fraction of what industries produce, governments across the world are pushing for stricter automotive emission regulations. These stricter emission regulations have been pushing diesel powertrains to the edge of the cliff.
However, some manufacturers are doing their best to preserve diesel powertrains as they are more suitable for SUVs and pickups. As such, Toyota has introduced mild-hybrid tech in the diesel-powered Hilux for the European markets.

This hybrid tech in the new Toyota Hilux helps the model post better fuel efficiency figures and also lower emissions at the same time. According to Toyota, the 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine gets a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup coupled with an electric motor and few other supporting components.
That being said, the mild-hybrid tech has not made the new Toyota Hilux MHEV any softer and it can still tow heavy stuff and go off-road like ever before without breaking down. Toyota also claims that the mild-hybrid setup has been carefully integrated to allow for water-wading depth of 700mm.

Other advantages of the hybrid tech on the Toyota Hilux include enhanced torque assist, smoother start/stop function, and recovering otherwise wasted energy through regen braking. All of this leads to the new Hilux hybrid returning 10 per cent better fuel efficiency than diesel-only powertrain-equipped variants.
As the new mild-hybrid powertrain-equipped Toyota Hilux pickups hit the European market, we can expect Toyota to introduce this new powertrain in other markets as well. Furthermore, we expect this new powertrain to reach Southeast Asian markets before other markets that are outside of Europe.
Since, the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner SUV share powertrain options, we also expect this new mild-hybrid diesel engine to be available in the Fortuner SUV as well. However, we are not sure when this new powertrain will make it to the Indian market.
Thoughts About The New Mild-Hybrid Diesel Engine In The Toyota Hilux
The newly introduced mild-hybrid diesel engine in the Toyota Hilux is expected to not only lower emissions but it will also improve the fuel efficiency figures of the model. Also, we expect this new powertrain to have a positive effect on the drivability of the Hilux SUV.
