Toyota EPU Concept Electric Pickup Truck Revealed
Japanese carmaker Toyota has unveiled the EPU concept ahead of the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show (Japan Mobility Show 2023) that kicks off later this week.
The Toyota EPU concept's name stands for Electric PickUp. The all-new electric pickup is one of four concepts that Toyota will be showcasing at the Tokyo Motor Show. The other concepts are the Land Cruiser Se, FT-Se and FT-3e.
The EPU is smaller in size compared to the Toyota Hilux sold in global markets but sports a longer wheelbase. The Toyota EPU concept is designed as a next-generation mid-size pickup.
The EPU concept boasts a setup and measures 5,070 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height. The wheelbase of the Toyota EPU concept is 3,350mm in length and the pickup can carry up to 5 people and loads of baggage and cargo in the rear deck.
Some of the standout features of the EPU concept are its double cab design and unique deck space. The deck space is versatile and caters to a broad range of user applications. A two-piece tailgate provides easy access to the rear deck, accommodating a wide variety of user preferences and supporting diverse mobility lifestyles, particularly those who enjoy the great outdoors.
The cabin of the Toyota EPU concept is a unique blend of futuristic and minimalist design. The dashboard houses several storage areas and two free-standing displays - one behind the yoke-style steering wheel (instrumentation) and another atop the centre console (infotainment).
The gear selector is housed in the display console, which frees up space in the centre console and gives the pickup concept a walkthrough design. This thoughtful design approach underscores Toyota's commitment to creating vehicles that are not only technologically advanced but also user-friendly.
While Toyota has yet to release full powertrain specifications for the EPU, however, it assures that the EV's packaging ensures a low centre of gravity for "superior handling stability and ride comfort".
