India's passenger vehicle industry registered its best-ever year of sales in the calendar year 2022. Car brands sold 3,781,675 units in 2022, which saw the passenger vehicle industry grow by 24.39 per cent year-over-year.

The previous best year of sales for the Indian car industry was 2018 when just over 3.34 million vehicles were sold. 2022 saw almost every passenger vehicle manufacturer except for Renault and Nissan register positive growth.

1) Maruti Suzuki - 1,576,025 Units

India's largest carmaker enjoyed a good year of sales in 2022 selling 1,576,025 units last year. Maruti Suzuki's Year-over-Year sales grew by 15.48 per cent or 211,238 units compared to the 1,364,787 units the carmaker sold in 2021.

2) Hyundai - 552,511 Units

South Korean carmaker Hyundai managed to cling to the second spot on the sales charts for 2022 by just 25,713 units. Hyundai sold a total of 552,511 units in 2022, 47,478 units (9.40 per cent) more than it did in 2021 when the Korean marque shipped out 505,033 units.

3) Tata Motors - 526,798 Units

Tata Motors continued its surge up the sales charts in 2022 challenging Hyundai for the second podium spot for most of the year and even managing to knock its rival off the position a few times over the 12-month period. Tata sold 526,798 units in 2022, which was a 59.07 per cent (195,617) rise compared to the previous year. Tata sold 331,181 units in 2021.

4) Mahindra - 335,088 Units

India's SUV specialist Mahindra enjoyed a stellar year of sales in 2022 selling a total of 335,088 vehicles over the 12-month period. Mahindra's Year-over-Year sales rose by 66.14 per cent or 133,395 units compared to 2021 when it sold 201,693 units.

5) Kia - 254,556 Units

South Korean carmaker Kia enjoyed a good year of sales in 2022, a year that saw it launch the EV6 electric crossover in the country. Kia sold 254,556 units in 2022, which saw its numbers rise by 40.19% (72,973 units) Y-o-Y compared to 2021 when it sold 181,583 units.

6) Toyota - 160,357 Units

Toyota flexed its hybrid muscles in 2022 launching the Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV and the Innova Hycross MPV. The Japanese carmaker sold 160,357 units in 2022, which was a 22.65 per cent (29,609 units) growth over the previous year. In 2021, Toyota sold 130,748 units in India.

7) Honda - 95,022 Units

Japanese carmaker Honda sold 95,022 units in India last year. 2022 saw Honda show its hybrid prowess with the launch of the strong hybrid City sedan. Honda's Y-o-Y sales grew by 6.61 per cent or 5,889 units in 2022 compared to the previous 12-month stretch. Honda sold 89,133 units in 2021.

8) Renault - 81,042 Units

French carmaker Renault was one of just two carmakers in the Indian passenger vehicle market that saw 2022 end in the red. Renault sold 81,042 units last year which saw its Y-o-Y sales numbers drop by 15.47 per cent (14,836 units) compared to 2021 when it sold 95,878 units.

9) Skoda - 53,721 Units

Czech carmaker was one of the comeback stories of the year selling more than double the cars it shipped out in 2021. Skoda launched the Slavia in 2022, which showed that Indians still were willing to buy sedans, as it sold a total of 53,721 units. Skoda's Y-o-Y sales grew by 125.17 per cent or 29,863 units compared to 2021 when it sold 23,858 units.

10) MG - 48,063 Units

Chinese-owned British firm MG sold 48,063 units in 2022, a year that saw its sales grow by 19.34 per cent compared to 2021. MG's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 19.34 per cent or 7,790 units compared to 2021 when it sold 40,273 units.

The Indian passenger vehicle industry witnessed its best every year in terms of sales numbers beating out the previous record holder - 2018 by over 45,000 units. With more vehicles set to make their debut at Auto Expo 2023 and people switching to cars faster than ever before, the future looks bright for the Indian passenger vehicle industry.
