Top 10 Bestselling Car Brands In India (Dec 2022) - Tata Pips Hyundai To Second Spot
India's passenger vehicle industry grew by over 8 per cent year-over-year in December but shrunk by just over 14 per cent compared to November.
India's passenger vehicle industry grew by over 8 per cent year-over-year in December but shrunk by just over 14 per cent compared to November as 275,129 cars found new homes in the last month of 2022.
Overall car sales in December rose by 8.2 per cent (20,859 units) compared to the 254,270 units sold over the same period in 2021. However, the passenger vehicle industry shrunk by 14.17 per cent compared to November 2022, when 320,564 vehicles found new homes.

1) Maruti Suzuki - 112,010 Units
India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki did not enjoy a good December as per its usual lofty standards. Maruti Suzuki sold 112,010 vehicles in December 2022 which was a drop of 8.95% (11,006 units) over the same period in 2021 when it sold 123,016 units. Maruti's month-over-month sales numbers were also in the red dropping by 15.40% (20,385 units) compared to November 2022 when it sold 132,395 units.
2) Tata Motors - 40,045 Units
Tata claimed the 2nd spot from Hyundai for one final time in 2022 selling 40,045 in December 2022. Tata's Y-o-Y numbers grew by 13.45% (4,746 units) compared to December 2021 when it sold 35,299 units. However, month-over-month metrics were in the red for the Mumbai-based carmaker shrinking by 13.02% (5,992 units) compared to 46,037 units sold in November 2022.
3) Hyundai - 38,831 Units
South Korean carmaker Hyundai slipped to third in the sales charts in December, selling 38,831 cars in the last month of 2022. Hyundai's Y-o-Y numbers were up 20.18% (6,519 units) compared to December 2021 when it sold 32,312 units. However, Hyundai's sales dropped by 19.11 per cent (9,172 units) compared to November 2022, when it sold 48,003 units.
4) Mahindra - 28,333 Units
India's SUV specialist Mahindra also had a mixed bag of a month in December 2022 when it sold 28,333 units. While Mahindra's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 62.13% (10,87 units) compared to December 2021 (17,476 units), the SUV specialist saw its M-o-M metrics drop by 6.77% (2,059 units) compared to November 2021's 30,392 units.
5) Kia - 15,184 Units
South Korean carmaker Kia ended 2022 with a mixed bag of sales goodies, selling 15,184 units in the final month of the year. Kia's Y-o-Y numbers rose by 94.74% (7,987 units) compared to the 7,797 units sold last in December 2022. However, as was the case with most of the other carmakers in this list, Kia's sales dropped by 36.80% or 8,841 units compared to the 24,025 units it sold in November 2022.

Japanese carmaker Toyota claimed the sixth spot selling 10,421 units last month. Toyota Y-o-Y and M-o-M were both in the red dropping by 3.80% (412 units) compared to December 2021 (10,833 units) and 11.42% (1,344 units) when compared to November 2022 (11,765 units).
Honda kept a hold of the 7th spot selling 7,062 units in December 2022. While M-o-M sales rose marginally by 0.16% or 11 units, Honda's Y-o-Y sales numbers dropped by 911 units or 11.43% compared to the same period in 2021.
Renault claimed the 8th spot with 6,126 vehicles finding new homes in December 2022. Renault's Y-o-Y were almost flat dropping by just 4 units (0.07%) compared to December 2021 while its M-o-M numbers dropped by 204 units (0.16 per cent) compared to November 2022.
Skoda enjoyed a fruitful December with the Czech carmaker selling 4,788 units in the final month of 2022. Skoda's Y-o-Y sales rose by 48.05% (1,554 units) compared to the 3,234 units sold in December 2021. M-o-M numbers were also up, rising by 8.01% or 355 units.
The final spot on this top 10 list was claimed by Volkswagen with the German marque selling 4,709 cars last month. VW's Y-o-Y sales numbers rose by 1,009 units or 27.27% compared to December 2021 when 3,700 vehicles were sold. VW's M-o-M numbers were also in the black, with the German carmaker's numbers rising by 143.36% or 2,774 units compared to November 2022's 1,935 units.
Thoughts About Car Sales In December 2022
India's car industry grew by 8.20% Y-o-Y in December 2022 as carmakers offered large year-end discounts to entice customers into new cars. However, the drop in numbers compared to November was expected as many customers waited for the new year to decide on a new family vehicle.
