Tesla Model S Plaid Reclaims Nurburgring EV Record - Stuttgart Riposte Soon?

The Tesla Model S Plaid has broken the Nurburgring lap record for a production EV. The Tesla Model S Plaid lapped the 20.82km Green Hell in a time of 7 minutes and 25.231 seconds hitting a top speed of nearly 289km/h.

The Tesla Model S Plaid that set the new lap record was the Track Package version of the 1,019bhp tri-motor electric sedan which gets better tyres and brakes and a top speed in excess of 200mi/h (322km/h).

The onboard footage of the lap shows that the record-setting car was fitted with a few more upgrades other than the track package extras. These include a round steering wheel (thank goodness) and a proper racing seat and roll cage (for the driver's safety).

The new lap record set by the track package equipped Model S Plaid saw the Tesla sedan smash the previous record set by a Porsche Taycan Turbo S by over 8 seconds. The Taycan Turbo S sported its own 'performance package' and set a lap time of seven minutes and 33 seconds.

However, doubts about just how 'production-spec' the record-breaking Model S Plaid was were raised by Nurburgring-based Youtuber and racing driver Misha Charoudin who also works as a driving instructor at the green hell.

In a post on the community tab of his Youtube channel, Charoudin raised issues with the record-breaking car. He pointed out that the blue car seen in the celebratory image sported quite a bit of negative camber.

However, he then stated something that would send Tesla fanboys around the world into a tizzy. Charoudin stated that Plaid's record around the ring had already been broken with an announcement due on the 75th birthday of a brand.

Charoudin could only be referring to the often speculated updated version of the Taycan which is said to have around 1,000bhp on tap and improved aero. With Porsche set to celebrate its 75th anniversary on the 8th of June, that record-breaking announcement could be just a few hours away.

Thoughts About The Tesla Model S Plaid's New Ring Record

The Tesla Model S has been in a titanic struggle with the Porsche Taycan for the crown of the fastest production EV on the Nurburgring. While the new record saw the Tesla beat Porsche's lap record by over 8 seconds, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer's anniversary celebrations will be one that Elon's team will be keeping a gimlet eye on.
