Tata Altroz iCNG's Twin Cylinder Technology Is A Game-Changer – Here’s How

Tata Motors recently opened bookings for the Tata Altroz CNG hatchback in India. However, what's very interesting is the unbelievable amount of boot space available in the Altroz iCNG hatchback despite having two CNG tanks in the boot.

In addition to that, Tata Motors highlighted the boot space of the Altroz iCNG hatchback through its official images. In fact, the CNG tanks are invisible in the official images and raises the question 'Where are the CNG tanks?'.

Speaking about raising, a closer look reveals that the boot floor of the Tata Altroz iCNG hatchback seems to have raised quite a bit. However, it would be impossible to fit a standard-sized CNG tank under this space and this is why most CNG hatchbacks do not have any usable boot.

This is where engineers at Tata Motors improved the packaging by placing two smaller 30-litre CNG tanks instead of one large CNG tank of similar capacity. This usage of two CNG tanks liberated more space on the upper portion of the boot, making it more usable.

Tata Altroz CNG Twin Cylinder Technology

It is also worth mentioning that the boot space has always been the Achilles heel for CNG hatchbacks globally. This meant CNG hatchback buyers have to sacrifice practicality for lower running costs.

However, with the introduction of Tata Altroz iCNG with "Twin Cylinder CNG Technology", customers can enjoy the cheaper running cost of a CNG hatchback, but without having to sacrifice the practicality.

Furthermore, the new Tata Altroz iCNG can also be started in CNG mode, which makes it very convenient for an average user. This is a feature that is still not available in CNG cars from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.

That being said, Tata Motors is offering the Altroz iCNG in four variants - XE, XM+, XZ, and XZ+. Colour options include Opera Blue, Arcade Grey, Downtown Red, and Avenue White.

In terms of powertrain, the upcoming Tata Altroz CNG uses a 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated, CNG-compatible engine with 76bhp of power and 97Nm of torque while running on CNG. However, in petrol mode, this engine can dish out 84.82bhp of peak power and 113Nm of peak torque.

Speaking about the Tata Altroz, the premium hatchback is the only hatchback in India to sport a 5-Star safety rating from Global-NCAP. In addition to that, the Tata Altroz also comes with safety systems such as multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX points, ESC and more.

In terms of pricing, we expect the Tata Altroz iCNG hatchback to be priced around Rs 1 lakh more expensive than the standard variants. This means the Tata Altroz iCNG is expected to be priced between Rs 7.45 lakh to Rs 9.90 lakh, ex-showroom.

In comparison, prices for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno S-CNG ranges between Rs 8.35 lakh and Rs 9.28 lakh, ex-showroom. However, it is worth mentioning that the Baleno CNG is not available in the base 'Sigma' and top-spec 'Alpha' trim levels.

Thoughts About The Upcoming Tata Altroz iCNG

With its "Twin Cylinder Technology", the CNG version of the Altroz hatchback brings forth affordable running costs without sacrificing practicality. As such, we expect the upcoming Tata Altroz iCNG hatchback to be a game-changer in the CNG segment.
