Sanam Sekhon Clinches Victory In JK Tyre Drift Challenge!

Sanam Sekhon, known as India's Drifting champion, reigned supreme in the initial JK Tyre Drift Challenge, securing wins in two out of three categories at India's first formal drifting competition. Veteran drifter Mudit Grover managed to secure places on the podium in all three divisions of this challenge.

In the competition, Sekhon displayed exceptional skill and control, maneuvering his custom-prepared Lexus GS 300 diagonally across turns, while Grover unveiled his remarkable abilities on the serpentine drift track in his BMW E46 at Buddh International Circuit with an impressive display of tyre-smoking car control.

Sekhon Triumphs In JK Tyre Drift Challenge

This Chandigarh-based driver claimed victory in the D1 category, raking in an astounding 744 points. His nearest competitor, Jugraj Singh Bhurjee, who was driving a BMW M3, managed a score of 476. Mudit Grover wrapped third place in his BMW E46, bagging 286 points.

Furthermore, Sekhon also triumphed in the D2 category with 460 points, sharing the podium with Mudit Grover, who secured 262 points, and Mugdha Grover, driving a Mercedes C200 K, bagging 156 points. However, hopes for an all-win streak by Sekhon were shattered as Grover pipped him to the finish line, winning the challenge with 700 points compared to Sekhon's 636, leaving Samyak Kapoor with 281 points far behind.

The scoring process involved a three-member international expert panel, consisting of Taniguchi Atsushi from Japan, Tanakorn Lertyaovarit from Thailand, and India's own drift expert, Alistair Woodham. Competitors were scored on various aspects, such as line, angle, style, and speed.

The competition vehicles were segregated into D1, D2, and Open categories, all determined by tyre width. The D1 category consisted of cars with tyres 215-255mm wide, while the maximum permitted tyre width in the D2 was 205mm. Regardless of tyre width, all cars were eligible for the Open category.

Drifting

Drifting, a motorsport that demands precision, skill, and vehicle command more than sheer speed, is a spectacle to watch, particularly for the younger audience, as it involves steering the vehicle sideways at high speed across turns, creating a smoke-show with their tyres.

The JK Tyre Drift Challenge was backed by FMSCI, India's motorsport federation, and organized by JK Tyre, introducing the Indian audience to the thrill of another motorsport category, drawing hundreds of spectators to the event, and captivating many through live stream.

"We are blown away by the fervent response for India's maiden Drifting competition. Witnessing the increase in global popularity of Drifting, the turnout we had was heartening. Our roster consisted of 20 extraordinarily skilled drivers who created a thrilling, tyre-smoking exhibition. With anticipation, we're confident that both the sport and the JK Tyre Drift Challenge will continue to grow in the years to come," stated Sanjay Sharma, Head of Motorsports, JK Tyre.

Alongside the Drift Challenge, the BIC was also the venue for the JK Tyre Formula Imperial and Indian Karting Race. These events, supported by JK Tyre and organized by the Imperial Society of Innovation Engineers (ISIEINDIA), presented engineering students with a platform to devise and develop sustainable mobility solutions.

The Formula Imperial category was won by Team Screwdrivers from Dhole Patil College of Engineering, Maharastra. Team Accelerons of the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra secured the runners-up position. In the Indian Karting Race, Team Luftwaffe Racing from the Rajarambapu Institute of Technology in Maharashtra bagged the championship in the EV class while Team Niyudrath Karting from the MIT Academy of Engineering in Pune emerged as champions in the CV class.
