Mercedes recently produced the 500,000th G-Class SUV. The 500,000th G-Class SUV rolled off the production line in Graz, Austria, 44 years after it was launched in 1979.

The 500,000th G-Class SUV rolled off the production line at the Magna Styr plant in Austria, where every G-Wagen has been produced over the past four and half decades.

The Mercedes G-Class SUV also known as the Geländewagen is considered by many as the best off-road vehicle in the world. However, in recent times, the G-Class has become the go-to SUV for the rich and famous.

Speaking about the production milestone, Emmerich Schiller, Chairman and CEO Mercedes-Benz G GmbH and Head of the Off-Road Vehicle Product Division at Mercedes-Benz AG, said, "On the occasion of the 500,000th anniversary, we would like to thank both our loyal customers and long-time fans as well as our employees and our production partner Magna Steyr in Graz. We are proud of this figure, which also underscores the exclusivity of the G-Class. After all, four whole decades have led to this significant anniversary. This makes the G-Class anything but a mass product. With the all-electric G-Class launching in 2024, which will push the boundaries of the off-road sector, we look forward with anticipation to the future of the off-road icon."

The 500,000th Mercedes G-Class SUV that rolled off the production line is a one-off that mimics the 280 GE from the 1986 model year. The one-off model incorporates iconic design elements such as the exterior colour and the seat pattern of the 1986 280 GE model.

The 500,000th unit of the G-Class SUV is finished in Agave Green, one of the first paint colours available for the G-Wagen. The spare wheel cover also mimics older G-Class models with its large Mercedes star, which is a whole lot bigger than the one found on current G-Wagen models.

The Geländewagen took seven years to hit the 50,000 production mark which it hit in 1986. Six years later in 1992, the 100,000th unit had rolled off the production lines in Austria.

The G-Class hit the 200,000 mark a decade later in 2002 with the 300,000th unit exiting the production plant in July 2017. Production levels then ignited into overdrive with the 400,000th unit heading out into the world in December 2020.

Thoughts About The Mercedes G-Class

The Mercedes G-Class started life as a road-going version of a military vehicle which ensured that it was brilliant off the beaten path. Over the four decades since its arrival in 1979, the G-Wagen has morphed into an SUV that is at home both in the garages of the hoi-polloi and on rough trails in inhospitable conditions.
