Maruti Suzuki WagonR Crosses 30 Lakh Sales Milestone - Tallboy On Top

Maruti Suzuki's WagonR hatchback has crossed the 30 lakh sales milestone. The milestone comes nearly 24 years after the WagonR was first launched way back in 1999.

Over the years, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has undergone three generational changes but has still managed to retain its iconic tallboy silhouette. And over the past two years of its journey, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been the bestselling car in the country.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR 30 Lakh Sales Milestone

The WagonR has always sold in good numbers over its nearly 24-year journey in India. The tallboy hatchback crossed the 5 lakh sales mark in 2008, nine years after it first arrived on our shores.

The next 5 lakh units of the WagonR took just another 4 years to reach new homes. The 15 lakh sales mark was breached three years later in 2015. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR hatchback hit the 20 lakh sales mark just two years later in 2017.

However, the next 5 lakh WagonR took more time to drive out of the showrooms as competitors closed in including similarly priced cars from Maruti itself. Add in the pandemic and the 25 lakh mark was breached in 2021.

The next 5 lakh units saw the sales of the WagonR get back into top gear as the nation came out of the pandemic with the tall boy hatch breaching the 30 lakh sales number this month.

So what has helped the WagonR do these numbers in record time? Well, the current iteration of the WagonR is offered with two engine options which run on both petrol and CNG.

Both engines sport dual jet and dual VVT tech along with start/stop technology which allows the WagonR to sip fuel. Maruti also offers the WagonR with an AMT gearbox which brings the ease of automatics to the tall boy hatch.

The smaller 1.0-litre, inline three-cylinder engine produces 66bhp and 89Nm of torque while the larger 1.2-litre inline four-cylinder engine ups the numbers to 88bhp and 113Nm of peak torque.

The WagonR like the rest of the lineup has recently been updated to the new BS6 Phase 2 emission standards and now sports an E20-compatible engine. The recent update also added safety features like Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill-Hold Assist that have become mandatory for all cars in India.

Speaking about the WagonR's milestone, Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, "WagonR's continued success with over 3 million cumulative sales is a testament to its undisputed reign as one of the most iconic Indian hatchbacks. Since its launch, WagonR has constantly evolved and risen to the pulse of changing customer preferences with class-leading features, design and performance. Happy to share that the 'Dil se Strong' WagonR has the highest percentage of repeat buyers as 24% of its customers prefer to upgrade to a new WagonR. The True Tall Boy has consistently featured in the top 10 best-selling cars in India since the last decade and has also held its position as the best-selling passenger vehicle in the country for the last two years."

Thoughts: The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has always been a favourite of the Indian public since it first came out in 1999. However, it still has a long way to go before it can catch up with the Alto as the nation's best-selling car of all time.
