Maruti Suzuki Celebrates Massive Production Achievement
Maruti Suzuki recently celebrated a significant milestone with its production unit Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG). The subsidiary has achieved cumulative production of 3 million vehicles, marking a considerable feat in the industry.
Under the broad umbrella of Maruti Suzuki, SMG is one of the key manufacturing facilities located in Hansalpur, Gujarat. It comprises three plants – Plant A, Plant B, and Plant C, which began operations in February 2017, January 2019, and April 2021 respectively.

The annual production capacity of SMG stands at 7,50,000 units, with 3,200 employees actively working as of 1st April 2023. It is also worth mentioning that the last 1 million units were produced in the last 17 months.
SMG has been manufacturing popular vehicle models such as Baleno, Swift, Tour S, Dzire, Fronx, and other OEM vehicles. Initially, SMG was part of Suzuki Motor Company, Japan (SMC). However, it recently became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki after the board of directors approved the acquisition.

SMG's journey since the inception of Plant A in 2017 has been marked with significant milestones. The cumulative production of 3 million vehicles was achieved in just under 7 years, showing a proportional increase in production with rising demand.
The production breakdown reveals that the first million milestone was reached in 3 years and 9 months. The subsequent million was completed in 5 years and 7 months. The final and most recent million took just 17 months, demonstrating the rapid and efficient production capabilities of SMG.

Expressing delight at this significant achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, attributed the milestone to a supportive manufacturing environment in Gujarat. He thanked the supplier partners involved in production escalation and acknowledged the significant contributions of SMG employees.
Takeuchi also discussed the recent acquisition of SMG from SMC, emphasizing how this strategic move will enhance production flexibility. The Gujarat plant is expected to undertake battery electric vehicle production, which is slated to begin in FY 2024-25.

Currently, SMG manufactures popular models such as Swift, Baleno, Dzire, and Fronx. Aligning with the Government's 'Make-in-India' vision, 50% of the vehicles produced at SMG in FY 2022-23 were exported to global markets, thus cementing India's position in the international automobile industry.
