Maruti Suzuki Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar – 2 Paths, Same Goal

Maruti Suzuki finally unveiled the Jimny SUV in India in its 5-door avatar. As such, a comparison with the Mahindra Thar SUV is unavoidable as both these SUVs cater to similar audiences.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar

Powertrain

The Mahindra Thar SUV is offered with three engine options. The least powerful of the lot is the 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel engine that pushes out 117bhp of power and 300Nm of torque, whereas the more powerful 2.2-litre, turbocharged diesel engine that pushes out 130bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. Moreover, the 6-speed automatic transmission can only be specified with the larger diesel engine, whereas the smaller diesel engine is a RWD model.

Other than these engine options, there is also a 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine with 150bhp of peak power and 300Nm of peak torque. However, the torque output is increased to 320Nm when this engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission instead of the 6-speed manual transmission.

On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny SUV comes with just one engine option. This engine is the Indo-Japanese automaker's tried-and-test 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated K15B engine with 103Bhp of peak power and 134.2Nm of peak torque. On top of that, customers can either opt for a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

Exterior Dimensions

The Mahindra Thar measures 3,985mm long, 1,820mm wide, 1,855mm tall and sports a wheelbase of 2,450mm. In comparison, the new Maruti Suzuki Jimny is 175mm slimmer, and 135mm shorter than Thar SUV. However, the wheelbase of the Jimny SUV is 140mm longer than the Mahindra Thar SUV.

Off-Road Specifications

In terms of off-road specifications, the Mahindra Thar sports 226mm ground clearance and it has an approach angle of 41.2 degrees along with a departure angle of 36 degrees and a breakover angle of 26.2 degrees. In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny sports 16mm lesser ground clearance at 210mm and has an approach angle of 36 degrees along with a departure angle of 50 degrees and a breakover angle of 24 degrees.

Practicality

Though the Mahindra Thar is a bigger SUV than the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, the latter is a more practical SUV owing to its 5-door layout as opposed to the 3-door layout in the Thar SUV. Apart from that, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny can seat 5 adults, whereas the Thar SUV can only seat 4 adults.

Thoughts About Mahindra Thar & Maruti Suzuki Jimny

While both the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny use a robust ladder frame chassis, both SUVs have different ideologies in executing their task. While the Thar comes out as a large and heavy SUV that relies on brute torque, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny on the other hand is a very light and practical SUV with more space for its passengers thanks to its better overall packaging.
