Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door Exports Commence – International Demand Likely To Go High For The Model
The Jimny 5 door, manufactured in India, is poised to make its international debut at the Japan Mobility Show later this month. This announcement by Maruti Suzuki comes after the Indian auto major began exporting the rugged SUV to regions such as the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa. Interestingly, it is only in India that the off-roader is manufactured in a five-door body style.
The Jimny 5 door's Export and Exceptional Features
Despite minor region-specific differences, the export version of the Jimny continues to maintain its key features, powertrain, and off-road gear. This rugged ladder frame SUV boasts a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

Following its debut at the Auto Expo in January, the Jimny 5 door was launched in India in June. Since then, Maruti Suzuki has planned to assemble over 100,000 units with a majority of around 66% earmarked for domestic sales, and the remainder for export. In India, the current sales average of the Jimny 5 door is at approximately 3,000 units per month, with ready delivery available at select outlets based on inventory and variant.
An International Debut
Reliable sources confirm that the Indian made Jimny 5 door will make its international showcase at Japan's Mobility Show. This marks the first time this Maruti SUV makes its debut outside India. However, while this SUV will be sold in a variety of international markets, it won't be launching in Europe anytime soon due to strict emissions norms.
The model's 1.5 litre K15B engine takes Suzuki's fleet CO2 average beyond the EU's maximum permissible limit of 95g of CO2 km. Consequently, Suzuki had to phase out the Jimny 3 door model from Europe's market in January 2020. However, it did stage a return in the form of a commercial vehicle with a cargo bay and safety partition behind the front seats.
The Electric Future of the Jimny
In early 2022, Suzuki revealed teasers for its upcoming range of EV models, which included an all-electric version of the Jimny. This model will launch first in Europe, initially in a 3 door body style, with a 5 door variant expecting to follow. Meanwhile, for Indian markets, Maruti is planning to release the Creta-sized eVX SUV as its pioneer born EV product circa late 2024.
In conclusion, the Jimny 5 door is indeed a game-changer in the automobile industry. Its introduction to international markets highlights India's potential as a key player in the global car manufacturing space. As the world gradually shifts towards eco-friendly vehicles, it will be exciting to see what the Jimny, and indeed Maruti Suzuki, have in store for us in the future.
