2023 Tokyo Motor Show: Lexus LF-ZL Concept Previews Future Flagship Electric SUV

Japanese luxury carmaker Lexus has taken the wraps off its latest concept, the LF-ZL, at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show.

The LF-ZL, standing for 'Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury', previews the brand's next flagship model and embodies a unique blend of luxury lifestyle and distinctive design all powered by next-gen battery tech.

The Japanese automaker is on a mission to become an all-electric manufacturer by 2035, and the LF-ZL is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Unveiled alongside the LF-ZC sedan concept, the LF-ZL showcases the brand's vision for an electrified future SUV flagship.

One of the key highlights of the LF-ZL is the use of high-performance batteries from parent company Toyota. These next-gen prismatic batteries are expected to increase the range, reduce weight, and enhance overall performance.

While Lexus suggests that a single charge could offer up to 1,000 kilometres for the LF-ZC, the LF-ZL's larger SUV body might likely result in a slightly reduced range unless the firm fits a larger size pack to its future flagship.

In terms of size, the LF-ZL concept measures 5,300mm in length, 2,020mm wide, and 1,700mm tall. The luxurious Japanese electric SUV concept also boasts a massive wheelbase of 3,350mm, which contributes to a spacious cabin.

Accessing the LF-ZL is made effortless with the theatrically sliding rear doors and a front door that opens up 90 degrees. Other highlights include the firm's check-mark-shaped LED headlights, a shut-off spindle-shaped front grille section and a curving roofline which has seen the rear windscreen disappear.

Once inside, the passengers are treated to a futuristic ambience with ultra-thin seats, ambient lighting, and the usage of bamboo and an array of screens.

The yoke-style steering wheel sports a new design, with the top angling away from the driver and two small screens on either side displaying the gear selector and infotainment.

Adding to the opulent interior is a massive screen in front of the passenger that extends into the middle of the dashboard.

The LF-ZL concept car also leverages Lexus' next-generation infotainment system, Arene OS. Designed to record the driver's preferences, it offers a more personalized experience with route settings, information, and general readouts.
