Kia's Flagship Electric SUV, EV9, Scheduled For India Launch In 2024 - Specs, Features & More
Kia made the headlines last year with their electric car, EV6. The current flagship model of the carmaker stands out with its futuristic looks, features, and impressive range. With the success of the EV6, Kia has made new plans to disrupt the Indian market.
Kia has recently unveiled their new expansion strategy, Kia 2.0, aiming to achieve 10 per cent of the market share in the highly competitive Indian market in the coming years. Kia will introduce new models and expand its dealerships nationwide as part of this strategy.
As a first step, Kia will launch its flagship electric SUV, the EV9, in India next year. The EV9 was initially exhibited as a concept at Auto-Expo 2023 and made its global debut in March 2023. This will mark Kia's second EV offering in the Indian market, following EV6.
Kia is adopting a top-down approach in the Indian EV market as they position its new EV9 and the existing EV6 in the premium category, catering to the higher-end segment of the market.
The EV9 is the most expensive and largest car offered by Kia. Ex-BMW designer Karim Habib designed the EV, and the car has a proper upright, clearly defined two box design.
Kia offers the EV9 in three powertrains in the international markets. The base variant, EV9 RWD, has a 76.1kWh battery pack that powers a single rear-mounted 160kw motor. It can produce 215bhp and 350Nm of torque, and Kia claims a 358km range on a single charge.
The mid variant, EV9 RWD long-range, houses a 99.8 kWh battery pack and a 150kw motor producing 201bhp power. This variant offers a range of 541km on a single charge.
The top end, EV9 AWD, is to be revealed by the carmaker. It is supposed to get two electric motors that deliver a combined output of 283kw, producing 380bhp and 600Nm of torque. Kia is yet to reveal the range figure for the top-spec EV9.
The body of the EV9 gets new bold styling, and the interior looks minimal and futuristic. It has a three-row cabin and a lucid dashboard with a large screen that houses the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster.
According to the Korean car manufacturer, the three row EV9 all electric SUV will compete against the likes of similarly priced and sized electric SUVs from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
Thoughts On The All New Kia EV9
EV9 will be the most expensive Kia and will compete against BMW iX. Going by the fully imported BMW iX pricing, we expect a similar price range for the EV9, which is around Rs 1 crore in our market.
Similar to its German competitor, the SUV will have limited units available for sale as a fully imported vehicle. In addition to the EV9, Kia plans to launch the all-new Carnival MPV and the Sonet facelift in India next year.
