Action sports legend and rally driver Ken Block has died following a snowmobile accident in Utah on Monday. The Gymkhana legend was 55 years old.
Block's death was confirmed by Hoonigan Industries on an Instagram post. The post reads, "It's with deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today. Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed. Please respect the family's privacy at this time while they grieve."

Ken Block was best known for his revolutionary Gymkhana series which he kicked off in 2008 when he ripped across an airfield in his rally-prepped 2006 Subaru WRX STI. A year later, Block made the first of many appearances on Top Gear when he took James May for a spin across the airfield which saw him earn the name 'Kenny from the Block' from Captain Slow.
From Gymkhana 3, Block switched to Ford machinery, sticking to rally machinery for most of the episodes except for a set of vehicles that bore the Hooni pre-fix. The best of these was the Ford Mustang RTR Hoonicorn, a madcap fire-breathing, all-wheel drive version of the iconic muscle car with 1,400bhp and over 1,600Nm of peak torque on tap.

Block revolutionized the way the world viewed automotive content on Youtube. His videos were breaking the internet long before that was ever a thing, generating millions of views as auto enthusiasts flocked to view him shredding tyres and going sideways for fun.
Block had stepped back from the driving seat for a bit allowing his friend and fellow automotive maniac, Travis Pastrana to take the helm. However, Block recently returned to his chief tyre shredder role in Electrikhana, which saw him drive an Audi S1 Hoonitron - an all-electric, 1,400bhp, Pikes Peak-inspired coupe - across the streets of Sin City - Las Vegas.

Before he took to the streets and the dirt shredding tyres for fun on the way, Block was known for DC Shoes, an apparel brand for action sports enthusiasts that he founded back in 1984. In 2004, Block sold DC shoes and the next year, he traded his office chair for a racing seat as he began his journey into rallying with the Rally America series. Block also participated in the World Rally Championship and the World Rallycross Championship.
