India’s First Electric Double Decker Bus To Be Showcased At Auto Expo 2023 – Check Out All Details
Auto Expo 2023 will also showcase India's first electric double decker bus. Moreover, this bus will be first used by the state transport department in Mumbai.
Diving into details, this electric double decker bus is made by Ashok Leyland's Switch Mobility and this model is named EiV22. Apart from that, the electric double decker bus made its first public appearance last year in Mumbai.
While electric buses have now become common in many metro cities in India backed by positive reviews by both commuters and staff, the electric double decker buses are yet to be introduced in India. As such, there is a lot of excitement regarding the launch of the electric double decker buses in Mumbai.
That being said, around 200 units of the Switch EiV 22 electric double decker buses are said to join Mumbai's BEST fleet this year. This will make BEST the first user of electric double decker buses in India and the success of the service will determine the implementation in other Indian states.
Coming to the specifications of the Switch EiV22, the electric double decker bus is equipped with a ginormous 231kWh battery pack. Thanks to this large battery pack, Switch Mobility claims a range of up to 250 kilometres on a fully charged battery pack. However, it is safe to expect a real-world range of approximately 200 kilometres.
Being an electric bus and having to pack an enormous battery pack, many may assume the Switch EiV22 electric double decker bus to take ages to charge to its full capacity. However, engineers at Switch Mobility have worked their wonders as the EiV22 takes just 80 minutes to charge to its full capacity.
Taking a look at the battery technology, the Switch EiV22 electric double decker bus uses Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt (NMC) battery pack, which apparently comes with an 8-year warranty. Moreover, the electric double decker bus monitors battery temperature remotely to inform the driver of any dangers and comes with its own fire suppression system.
