Ford Decides Not To Sell Chennai Plant To JSW - Comeback On The Cards?
American carmaker Ford has pulled out of a deal that would have seen the Blue Oval brand sell its last remaining plant in Chennai to JSW claims a new report.
Ford Motor Company's decision to abandon its plans to sell its sole remaining factory site in India to JSW, located in Tamil Nadu, after reportedly finalizing the sale to JSW comes as a surprise, considering how keen the American carmaker was to exit India.

Ford's Chennai plant has been on the market since the company exited the Indian market over two years ago, in September 2021. The firm had tried to stave off its exit by teaming up with Mahindra, but in the end, mounting losses and the subsequent slowdown in the passenger vehicle market due to the COVID-19 pandemic saw Ford quit India.
The unexpected decision to halt the sale of the Tamil Nadu plant has sparked speculation about Ford's potential re-entry back into India, the world's third-largest auto market. It's worth noting that the American automotive giant has a significant history in the Indian market.

Ford entered the Indian market in 1995, launching the Ikon in 1999. The Fiesta, introduced in 2005, followed this. In 2010, Ford launched the Figo, which became a popular choice among Indian consumers. The company introduced the EcoSport in 2013, introducing India to the world of modern-day compact SUVs.
However, despite these launches, Ford faced stiff competition from other automakers, who were quite ready to undercut the American giant, leading to declining sales figures. The company recorded its highest sales in 2010, selling over 83,000 units. However, by 2020, the sales had dropped to just over 48,000 units.

The decision to withdraw from the Indian market in 2021 was a part of Ford's global restructuring strategy. The company had stated that it would cease vehicle manufacturing operations in India but continue to cater to the aftermarket sector.
Fast forward to the present day, and Ford's decision to hold onto its Tamil Nadu plant could cause quite a stir among fans of the Blue Oval brand. While the company has not made any official statement about re-entering the Indian market, the move certainly raises questions about Ford's future plans.
Thoughts About Ford's Decision To Halt The Sale Of Its Chennai Plant
Ford's decision to retain its Tamil Nadu plant could potentially signify a shift in the company's strategy for the Indian market. It remains to be seen whether this move is a precursor to the company's re-entry into India's auto sector or simply a strategic business decision.
