The automotive landscape is shifting gears at an incredible pace, and the latest buzz comes from an unexpected source—a young enthusiast from Kerala, India, who has single-handedly transformed a beloved Toyota Innova into a driverless car.
The Toyota Innova Crysta has etched its name as the quintessential family MPV for Indian roads, renowned for its comfort on prolonged journeys. However, one ingenious mind in Kerala envisioned the Innova not just as a family transporter but as a pioneer in India's driverless car revolution.
Despite India not yet being a market for fully autonomous vehicles, the Kerala tech whiz took it upon himself to breach this frontier. Internationally, the genesis of driverless cars has been led by firms such as Waymo, which has already deployed driver-free taxis in certain parts of the United States.
Drawing inspiration from such advancements, the young technologist from Kerala embarked on a mission to reimagine the Toyota Innova. Roshi John is not just the creator of this autonomous Innova but also a robotics specialist and the brain behind Roshai, a Kerala-based enterprise.
His journey towards innovation began with an incident on Indian roads. Recollecting his brush with danger upon returning from South Korea, John narrated how a sleepy taxi driver's sudden fainting episode led to a collision. While the accident was minor, it marked the beginning of John's quest to develop a self-driving car.
Triggered by the mishap, John and his team embarked on a journey to harness artificial intelligence for vehicular autonomy. Their initial experiments breathed life into a Tata Nano, enabling it to operate autonomously. Buoyed by this success, they moved their focus to the Innova Crysta, implementing and refining their ground-breaking AI technology.
The team's diligent efforts have birthed a prototype currently being tested at the Infopark in Kochi. The modified Innova is equipped with an array of sophisticated gadgets, including a 360-degree camera, radar, and other essential sensors.
The integration of AI algorithms allows this Innovator's Crysta to analyze and adapt to dynamic road conditions, ensuring a seamless driving experience. This prototype is indeed a testament to India's potential to step into the realm of autonomous vehicles.
Prospects of Driverless Vehicles In India
Although India is yet to officially welcome driverless cars on its roads, the emergence of the autonomous Innova indicates a future where the nation could see widespread use of self-driving technology. The final hurdle remains regulatory approval, after which the market could witness a significant transmutation with the advent of intelligent vehicles.
DriveSpark notes that while completely autonomous cars are still on the horizon for India, the likes of ADAS have started addressing gaps in safety through features such as emergency braking, collision avoidance, and lane-keeping.
