Stage 5 of Dakar saw the riders and drivers once again do a loop around Ha'il (this time to the east) which saw them cover just over 645km today including a 373km timed special stage.

Bikes

Honda's French rider Adrien Van Beveren claimed his first stage win of Dakar 2023 today, completing the 645km loop around Ha'il in 4 hours 27 minutes and 28 seconds which included 45 seconds worth of bonuses.

Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo completed a Honda 1-2 in the stage as the Chilean rider completed the stage just 13 seconds behind his teammate. BAS World KTM rider Mason Klein took the final podium spot today, finishing the stage 5 minutes and 13 seconds behind Van Beveren with a time of 4 hours, 32 minutes and 41 seconds.

It was a good day in the saddle for the two remaining Sherco riders in the rally - Lorenzo Santolino and Rui Goncalves - who finished today's stage in 8th and 9th respectively. Spain's Santolino finished the stage with a time of 4:38:44, 11 minutes and 16 behind the stage winner. Goncalves was a further 1 minute and 6 seconds behind his teammate.

Hero's riders had another mixed day in the sands of Saudi Arabia. Sebastian Buhler put yesterday's woes behind him as he finished today's stage in the 13th spot with a time of 4:41:07. Buhler finished the stage 13 minutes and 39 seconds behind Van Beveren's Honda.

Argentine rider Franco Caimi finished the stage in 24th with a time of 4:56:02, coming in 29 minutes and 14 seconds behind the stage winner. The final remaining Hero rider had another torrid day in the saddle, finishing the stage with a time of 6:08:40 to claim 62nd as he completed the stage 1 hour, 40 minutes and 50 seconds behind the Honda of Van Beveren.

In the general standings, Husqvarna's Skyler Howes leads Dakar 2023 with an overall time of 23:21:09. Howes leads KTM's Kevin Benavides by just 44 seconds. Stage 2 winner, Mason Klein lies third, 1 minute and 40 seconds behind Howes.

Sherco's Lorenzo Santolino lies 12th overall, 26 minutes and 15 seconds behind Howes. Hero's Caimi currently occupies the 14th spot, trailing Howes by 1:03:42. Up next is Sherco's other remaining rider, Rui Goncalves in 19th. The Portuguese rider sits 2 hours, 6 minutes and 11 seconds behind the leader.

Hero's Sebastian Buhler lies 28th overall, 3 hours, 43 minutes and 41 seconds adrift of the overall leader Howes. Ross Branch is 44th overall, 6 hours, 8 minutes and 18 seconds behind Howes.

Stage 5 was a proper slugfest between 4 of the favourites coming into Dakar 2023 as Al-Attiyah, Loeb, Peterhansel and Sainz kept pace with each other for almost the entire stage today.

However, it was Loeb who once again found himself with a bit of mechanical trouble that saw him lose 15 minutes. Al-Attiyah, who had taken over the lead before Loeb found trouble, then pushed ahead to take the win by 1 minute and 57 seconds from Sainz, as he finished the stage in 4 hours, 13 minutes and 23 seconds.

Peterhansel ensured that there were two Audis on the podium, finishing the stage 3 minutes and 44 seconds behind Al-Attiyah's Toyota. Loeb's troubles saw him end the stage in 9th, 19 minutes and 58 seconds behind Al-Attiyah.

Al-Attiyah's win today saw him extend his lead in the general standings to 22 minutes and 36 seconds with an overall time of 20:47:36. Peterhansel's podium finish today, saw him take over the second spot. This demoted Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi to the final podium spot, 27 minutes and 01 second behind Al-Attiyah.

Today's stage saw riders and drivers push into the Saudi sands with Van Beveren winning in the bikes category and Al-Attiyah claiming his second stage win of Dakar 2023.

Tomorrow, riders and drivers will escape the hell that was Ha'il as they head south towards Al Duwadimi, a journey that will see them cover 877.69km, including a 467km special stage.
