Dakar 2023 Stage 2 Results: Al-Attiyah And Klien Win As Hero's Buhler Finishes 2nd

Stage 2 of Dakar 2023 saw riders and drivers travel inland from Sea Camp on the Red Sea shores to Alula. Today's stage featured a 430-kilometre-long special stage as part of the 589.07km route.

Bikes
American rider Mason Klein claimed his maiden Dakar stage victory today despite being hit with a two-minute time penalty for speeding. Klein finished today's stage in a time of 5 hours, 23 minutes and 4 seconds (post-penalty) to claim the win.
Hero's German rider Sebastian Buhler came home in second with a time of 5 hours, 24 minutes and 13 seconds, 1 minute and 9 seconds behind Klein. Taking the final podium spot was Husqvarna rider Skyler Howes who finished the day just 4 seconds behind Buhler.
Hero's Ross Branch finished the stage in 4th spot with a time of 5 hours, 25 minutes and 2 seconds and was just 18 seconds ahead of two-time Dakar winner Toby Price who rode his KTM across the Saudi sands today in a time of 5 hours, 25 minutes and 20 seconds.
Next among those riding machinery known to Indian fans was Sherco rider Lorenzo Santolino who finished the stage in 7th, 3 minutes and 10 seconds behind the winner. Hero's Franco Caimi was further behind in 14th, finishing the stage in a time of 5:28:10.
Rui Goncalves piloted his Sherco to 22nd in Stage 2 of Dakar 2023, finishing in 5:39:15 and was one place ahead of his countryman and Hero rider Joaquim Rodrigues who clocked a time of 5:40:48 across today's stage. India's Harith Noah was the last of the Sherco riders riding today in 34th with a time of 5:59:04.
Coming to the overall standing after Stage 2, Mason Klein currently leads Dakar 2022 with a time of 9:38:28. Klein is currently 1 minute and 41 seconds ahead of KTM rider Toby Price. Dakar legend Joan Barreda Bort occupies the final podium spot, sitting 2 minutes and 3 seconds behind the leader.
The best-ranked Hero rider in the rally is currently Buhler, who sits 8 minutes and 34 seconds behind Klein in 10th overall. The best Sherco TVS rider is Santolino who sits in 13th overall, 10 minutes and 18 seconds behind the leader. India's Harith Noah is currently 30th overall astride his Sherco TVS and is 59 minutes and 44 seconds behind Klein in the overall time sheets.

Cars
Defending Champion Nasser Al-Attiyah blasted his way across the dunes to claim victory in the second stage of Dakar 2023. Al-Attiyah finished the stage in 5 hours and 26 seconds, 14 seconds ahead of Overdrive racing's Dutch driver Erik Van Loon, who completed the stage just 14 seconds adrift of the defending champ.
Stage 1 winner Carlos Sainz piloted his Audi Sport hybrid racer to the final podium spot. El Matador finished the stage in 5:05:31, 5 minutes and 5 seconds behind Al-Attiyah's Toyota Hilux.
The big talking point in the car's category today though was 9-time WRC champ, Sebastian Loeb. The Frenchman's Dakar demons once again reared their heads today as he lost quite a bit of time due to stoppages which saw him end the stage over an hour and 26 minutes behind his Qatari rival.
Carlos Sainz continues to lead the overall standings in the cars category with a time of 8 hours, 34 minutes and 26 seconds. El Matador is currently 2 minutes and 12 seconds ahead of the 2022 Dakar winner and defending champion Al-Attiyah. Century Racing's Mathieu Serradori completes the podium sitting 24 minutes and 55 seconds behind Sainz.
Thoughts About Dakar 2023 Stage 2
The second stage of Dakar 2023 saw defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah rumble home to claim victory as he shrugged off yesterday's troubles to climb to second overall in the cars category. American rider Klein won the stage on the bikes and now leads the category at Dakar 2023.
Tomorrow, the riders and driver continue eastwards to Ha'il, a journey of just over 669 kilometres as the world's toughest rally continues its torturous way across the sands of Saudi Arabia.
