BMW's New X2 and iX2 Revealed: The Ultimate Compact Luxury SUV Coupes
BMW looks set to shake up the compact luxury SUV-coupe segment with the unveiling of its second-generation X2 and the all-electric iX2.
Drawing design cues from the larger X4 and X6 coupe SUVs, the new X2 models feature a heavily sloping roofline and aggressive looks that solidify their ties to BMW's larger models including massive kidney grilles, flared wheelarches and heavily sculpted front and rear bumpers.
Inside, the cabin boasts a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.7-inch central touchscreen. The new X2 offers increased cabin space for those inside thanks to its increased wheelbase, width and height which includes an extra 25mm of legroom at the rear. The X2 comes with a boot space of 560 litres, which drops to 525 litres for the all-electric iX2.
The X2 range starts with the mild-hybrid sDrive20i powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and a 48V mild-hybrid system and comes mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The X2 SDrive 20i pushes out 168bhp and 280Nm of torque and sprints from 0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds and onward to a top speed of 213km/h.
The high-performance X2 M35i xDrive packs a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that pushes out 296bhp and 400Nm of torque. The engine sends power to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The X2 M35i xDrive sprints from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h.
The final ICE option is the X2 sDrive18d diesel which is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot oil burner churning out 148bhp and 360Nm of peak torque. The X2 sDrive18d sprints from 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of 210km/h.
The all-electric iX2 has only one variant, the xDrive30, which features two electric motors that produce a total of 309bhp and 494Nm of torque. 0-100km/h is taken care of in 5.6 seconds and the top speed is 180km/h. The 64.7kWh battery provides a range of up to 450km.
Order books for the new BMW X2 are now open in Europe. The new BMW X2 and iX2 will make their public debut at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show later this month with deliveries set to begin in March 2024.
Thoughts About The BMW X2 & iX2
The second-gen BMW X2 and the all-new iX2 from the Bavarian firm take design cues from their larger sibling to become the compact luxury SUV coupes they were always meant to be.
The arrival of the iX2 also sees the X2 range go full electric for the first time. While the range isn't the greatest at 450km (WLTP), it shows BMWs willingness to push towards electric sooner rather than later.
