Bharat NCAP Crash Test Ratings To Be Implemented From October 1 – Huge Benefit For Car Manufacturers
The union minister of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari recently launched the Bharat NCAP. However, these newly launched crash protocols will be implemented from October 1.
It is also worth mentioning that India is the fifth country in the world to have its own car crash testing protocol. However, the Bharat NCAP car crash testing protocol is quite similar to the Global NCAP crash testing protocol.

In that case, if you are wondering why would automakers opt for Bharat NCAP, the answer rolls towards the cost. As such, car manufacturers can save plenty of money by opting to test under the Bharat NCAP crash test protocols.
In fact, the cost of testing a car under the Bharat NCAP crash testing protocols cost approximately Rs 60 lakh. In comparison, most other car crash tests conducted outside of India would cost the manufacturer anywhere around Rs 2.5 crore.

This means a car manufacturer looking to sell his products in India can test as many as 4 models under the Bharat NCAP for the cost of testing one model under any overseas crash testing protocol.
As mentioned, the new Bharat NCAP crash testing protocols are very closely aligned with global testing protocols. In fact, under the Bharat NCAP protocols, three types of crash testing will be conducted.

These crash tests include the Offset Deformable Barrier Frontal Impact Test, Side Impact Test, and Pole Side Impact Test to determine the crashworthiness of the model. Furthermore, Bharat NCAP crash test protocols also consider the fitment of Safety Assist Technologies such as ESP.
Based on the crash test, Bharat NCAP will award separate ratings for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP). Moreover, this rating system is quite similar to other overseas crash test protocols with its star-based ratings.

That being said, in order to score a 5-Star safety rating for Adult Occupant Protection, the tested vehicle must score a minimum of 27 points. Moreover, 41 points should be scored to secure a 5-Star safety rating in Child Occupant Protection.
It is worth mentioning that the Bharath NCAP is a voluntary crash testing program. However, OEMs are very positive regarding these tests and Bharat NCAP is said to have received more than 30 requests ahead of its implementation in the country.
For the Bharat NCAP crash test, the vehicles will be provided by the manufacturer. However, the testing agency has the freedom to pick up the same model from an authorised dealership of the manufacturer.
After conducting the crash test, Bharat NCAP will the result with the manufacturer. However, this result can either be published or the manufacturer can seek a reassessment of the model.
Thoughts: The new Bharat NCAP crash testing program will significantly reduce the cost of crash testing new cars. As such, this program is expected to encourage automakers to develop safer cars for India.
